San Antonio DJ Pulls The Plug On The Dixie Chicks

A popular country music group has some San Antonians turning off their radios. A KJ 97 DJ pulled the plug on the trio's songs after lead singer Natalie Maines made a negative comment about President Bush.

The trio is on tour overseas, but they're causing quite a stir back here at home.

"Natalie Maines before a concert audience in London, England said, and I quote, ‘Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas,’" said Keith Montgomery with KJ 97.

The comments prompted Montgomery to pull the Chicks music off the air Thursday

"I would say the reaction is 99 percent in favor of what I have done," said Montgomery.

Texans aren't the only ones upset about Maine's comments. Reaction from all over the country caused the group on Thursday to post an explanation of their stance. The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

But in the process of putting their opinion out there, they're losing support. Angry phone calls flooded radio stations across the country Thursday, calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album "Home" on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide." The Dixie Chicks are coming to San Antonio in July.

Montgomery says, after hearing from more listeners, he'll decide on Friday whether to play their music on his show.

You know, the two outer "chicks", the violin player and the Dobro player, have the real talent anyway. They're "pickers", and were the ones who said they won't discuss politics. It's only Maines who shot her mouth off, and as an acoustic guitar playing singer, is the easiet to replace of the three.

Hell, there's 20 ladies they could plug in their right now.

Have the other two made any statements yet about this controversy? Wouldn't it be cool if they would dump Maines from their act. In fact, I will pledge right here and right now to go buy their entire catalogue on CD and get a ticket to their next local concert if they would do so. I'm not holding my breath though.

Maines doesn't get it. I think the earlier post about the people in the towers summed it up pretty well. It's time to remove the "Brew Dall" dictator from Iraq and we shouldn't stop there either.

After years of study of the great political philosophers from Aristotle to Karl Popper, the Dixie Chicks rank among the elete intellectual political philospohers of our day. That and nice boobs got them where they are today.

She did use the word "WE".
Silence does not exclude complicity.
Why would maines speak up if she knew the others disagreed?.

They are going to be booed loudly. Once a decision has been made, Americans circle the wagons and support Americans. These chicks screwed up big time. Country music is a bastion of conservatism. Not a smart platform for spewing appeasement crude.

My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

You have no right to be heard, however. And your frustrated little opinion is having a negative impact on those who have enjoyed or tolerated hearing you. The beauties of the free market!

They're being pulled from many radio stations, but they just soiled my TV screen on CMT.

An update from the San Antonio Express News:
NEW: Dixie Chicks face radio boycott after remarks about Bush

San Antonio Express-News

Web Posted : 03/14/2003 3:04 PM

The days of playing the Dixie Chicks' hit "Landslide" in heavy rotation came to a screeching halt at country music stations across the country when lead singer Natalie Maines took a swipe at the president.
Earlier this week, Maines told a concert audience in London, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

As word spread of Maines' remark, country stations - including several in the San Antonio area - started boycotting the Chicks' music.

Roy Holley, promotions director and morning show host at KBUC 95.7 FM in Jourdanton, said the station's owner hasn't made a decision on whether to ban the Chicks just yet. Holley himself thinks the Chicks may have gone too far.

"I defend their right to say it, but I think they’ve gone to the top, made too much money and they’re going to be surprised to see the backlash that’s going to happen to their record sales," he said. "I wouldn’t be the guy at Sony who works with them and have their big boss call them and say, 'What’s your group doing?' That statement is going to cost somebody several million dollars."

Good idea. Who says we can't FREEP the Dixie Chunks' concerts?

It won't cost a thin dime outside of markers and poster board. And it would be a barrel of laughs to boot.

What an inadequate explanation. She should have said, "Gosh, maybe I just don't have any sense."

The libs are using the First Amendment to try to make the rest of us feel guilty in retaliating against celebrities like her. (Her unspoken position is that we conservatives have no right to seriously--i.e., in a way of serious commitment--disagree with her. If we do, we are really bad guys.)

LOL Now there is a thread about pawn shops and stores that sell used CDs refusing any more Dixie Chicks CDs or tapes. This is getting hilarious!!!

A good lesson in reaping what you sow.

Does anyone know where they are now? Are they back in the Country or still overseas? If they've not yet returned, they should be greeted at the airport by protesters.

I think they are still overseas. Their concert schedule doesn't show them having any concerts here in the states until May (or at least from the schedule I looked at)
