Welcome to the trans-Atlantic food fight. Yesterday, while Jacques Chirac was wagging his veto finger, Republican lawmakers in Washington officially decreed that the quintessential American hamburger has no business sharing a plate with greasy Gallic potatoes. French fries will henceforth be known as "freedom fries" in the House cafeteria. Breakfast will offer "freedom toast."

OK, I did a search for this article, and I found several others on the subject, but not this one. I posted it because Colin Levy always brings a smile to myface, and because the linked website "francesux.net" may bring a smile to yours. Au revoir mes amis.

Nicely done. I like the French-fried stake one. Also, a freeper on another thread said she "Already boycott's French's mustard--it's too yellow". LOL. Methinks the French may have let their panties twist a tad too tightly on this one and it will forever make them the derriere of jokes in the future....

Let's really get serious about the symbolism. Ship the statue of liberty back to them, dismantled. Tell them they can put it back together if they like, and put it up somewhere in France, if they can stand the shame of looking at it.

Yeah, and meanwhile, over in McDonald's Paris, they are serving pommes frittes instead of French Fries, and the Royale with Cheese, instead of the quarterpounder.

While I'm all for it, the "french" in french fries does not refer to the country. It is a word for the way they are cut.

I bet few here remember when France raided our gold reserve by redeaming there gold backed dollars.

We could have applied their dollars to their WW II debt. Naw that would take cajonies.

I'm not exactly sure how the US could freeze all of France's assets.

Silliness.

What the French call "pommes frites" and we (used to?) call "French fries" are actually a Belgian dish. "Pain perdu" (literally "lost bread") is what we call "French toast", the idea being that bread too stale to eat as bread can be recovered in this manner.

We're mad at the Germans these days, too. How about bringing back the First World War terminology and call sauerkraut "liberty cabbage" again? In my family it's "kapusta", anyway.

You'll notice that we didn't go for this kind of nonsense in the Second World War.

The real problem is that no product we normally use is called Iraqi-something, Arabic-something, or Muslim-something.

Wait! I forgot about "Arabic" numerals (actually from India but that's what we call them).

I, II, III, IV, V, VI -- Roman numerals
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 -- Liberty numerals, buddy!

A symbolic show of distain for a culture that has abandoned its chief benefactor is not "silliness."
