***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

As long as it stays below us for a few more hours, I'm fine, my son is working until 6:00 and I worry about his getting stranded -- daughter was supposed to go with a friend to a concert in Philly, starting at 6:30 tonight -- the info. line says it's still on, but I'm leaning towards keeping her home

You miss out on all the fun!! I lived in southern New Mexico for a couple of years and never had temps fall below 60. As much as I liked the dry warm weather all year round, I still love snow/winter weather. If I had my way I'd move back up to New England and settle down in New Hampshire's White Mountain region...but alas, my abundant (*smile*) skills are required here in Maryland/N. Virginia!!

For us on the east coast, the LP location is bad news. The RCM loop shows the "conveyor belt" is only now beginning to get set up and ingesting Atlantic moisture. It has been Gulf moisture pretty much up until now.

Falls Church, VA. Just finished clearing a foot of snow off my deck on the theory that I'd rather not explore its structural limits. If we get another foot, that'll take it back to where it was before. Light, steady snow now, but Mr Radar says a heavier band is on the way...

The PA trunpike is shut down now at exit 23 in Downingtown - traffic reports say 40 car pile up.

Oh my. I hope that it turns out that everyone's okay.   Every good story and bit of fun has a "bum ya out" addendum, doesn't it?

Drying out now after another walk and play time for the dog ... he had a blast sniffing out his kong toy beneath the 12" ground cover!

I’m waiting for my neighbor to come over with his new snow blower and offer to do my driveway. lol

My road is clear. A farmer down the road has plowed it 4 or 5 times today with his monster John Deer.

We were a few degrees below last night here too, but we warm up faster because there are so many more lefty pols here blowing a constant stream of hot air.

3 degrees on the way to church in Buffalo (wind chill to -24)...the only"global heat "here is when I open my door to let it out:>)

To those threatened with a massive snow..Buy bread and milk and a comfort food...get out the scrabble and enjoy a special time with family...

(Having made it through 2 bilzzards and many heavy snow storms (7 feet last year) The blessing is it is a time to be still and out of the rat race..Be safe and enjoy the work of Gods hand:>)

I'm sitting in the middle of the VA Piedmont--Warrenton VA in Fauquier County and it's about 12-14 inches. Tough to tell as it is drifting a bit from the wind. This is the lightest snow I've ever seen--almost granular and any light breeze moves it around.

It's supposed to snow all day/night into Monday.

Tomorrow was supposed to be a snow make up day--looks like the kids will have the 9th day off this year. Guess they will be going up to 4th of July!

There was not a Church service to be attended in this entire region this morning.

You folks are used to this kind of stuff - we're not. Particularly those in charge of keeping roads clear.

Yes it is a good time for quality time with the family - unfortunately the 4 year old is tired of playing with mommy and my husband is out of town for the week.

LOL! It seems that whenever someone gets a new snow-blower, they want to do everyone's sidewalk! I know my husband did. He started with our sidewalk, then went down the street clearing a path for all the neighbors!

Noticed that BWI & DCA are closed till 7 PM. In Philly I calculated that the percentage of cancelled flights are at least 75%. The PA trunpike is shut down now at exit 23 in Downingtown - traffic reports say 40 car pile up.

That'd be no problem with Maglev.
Maglev vehicles glide about 6" above the track.
However, the guideway itself is elevated, and any snow would simply blow-off and drop to the ground rather than accumulating and stopping transportation.
