Democrats demand ‘proof’ from Bush

Daschle, Pelosi sharply assail president on eve of State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 — On the eve of President Bush’s State of the Union address, congressional Democratic leaders challenged the president to show “proof to the world” that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.

Jan. 26 — Presidential aides indicate that Bush’s State of the Union address will deal with a growing federal deficit and will require cuts to some programs. NBC’s Joe Johns reports.

IN WHAT WAS billed as a “pre-buttal” to Bush’s address to Congress and the nation Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the party’s leader in the House, sharply criticized Bush for taking what they said was a “hurry-up approach on Iraq” and charged that he was creating a “credibility gap” by saying one thing and doing another across a range of issues.

“If we have proof of nuclear and biological weapons, why don’t we show that proof to the world — as President Kennedy did 40 years ago when he sent Adlai Stevenson to the United Nations to show the world U.S. photographs of offensive missiles in Cuba,” Daschle said at the National Press Club news conference.

“At a time when we have only just begun to fight the war on terror, the American people deserve to hear why we should put hundreds of thousands of American troops at risk, spend perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars, risk our alliances, and inflame our adversaries to attack Iraq,” said Daschle, D-S.D.

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS CITED

Daschle’s reference to Cuba related to the Cuban missile crisis of four decades ago. At the time, the Kennedy administration unveiled reconnaissance photographs at the United Nations to prove its claim that the Soviet Union had dispatched missiles to an island 90 miles off the United States mainland.

“The state of our union today is anxious,” he said. “The triple threat of war, terrorism and recession are combining to make Americans unsure about their future and unclear about the course our nation is taking.

Pelosi’s criticism of Bush was directed largely at domestic issues, including the president’s proposed elimination of the tax on corporate dividends and his record on the environment.

I agree with you...Republic really got to the point.

Today's liberals have no concept of honor. Their honor and self-worth come solely from the power wielded by politicians paying for bread and circuses.

Liberals also know little of world history. I can see some maroon from DU scratching his head saying, 'Bread and circuses? WTF is he talking about?'

Putting it into print is probably a good way to hide it from many Democrats.

Is it so hard to understand that Iraq is not hiding evidence of compliance? If they'd dismantled their programs we'd know about it.

Democrats are obviously brain-damaged or the worse sort of opportunists. I place my bets on the latter.

And have you noticed how it's always Bush's responsibilty to the case for things? This is a nice little Jedi mind trick that allows Democrats to appear fair and thoughtful while never assumeing intellectual responsibility and thrusting their own presuppositions into the debate. And since vast swaths of the voting public value the appearence of thoughtfulness above all else, it's very effective.

What amazes me is how they keep setting themselves up. They do it constantly.

The Socialists are used to dealing with the dumb Republicans. The Bushies are more formidable opponents. - Tom

.....Opponents of Bush -- Proof that Saddam is Clean of WMD!....

In the interest of the Republic, it is your duty Sanator Dashle, to provide uncontestable proof that Iraq does not posess weapons of mass deatruction.

Well, there they go again . . .

Seems to me all this talk about "demanding" this and that regarding the war sounds mighty familiar.

Also seems to me that in the last days the White House has done a masterful job of managing expectations. One hears everywhere---I mean, everywhere!---that the President has no intention of saying anything meaningful whatsoever on the state of the war on terror or on Iraq in his speech tomorrow evening.

So overwhelming is this message that it has caused Rats everywhere to jump up and pound their boney chests, demanding "Proof! Proof! Proof!"

If Dubya lays a wallop up-side their heads tomorrow night, it won't be the first time the Rats got what they bleated for---and it knocked them silly (not to mention right out of the majority).

"....they demand proof from the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES...in other words, they believe Iraq!....end of rant(for now)"

Either that, or by demanding proof they are forcing Bush to lay all his cards on the table, exposing people who are giving us intelligence in Iraq, thereby helping the RAT friend Suddam!

AND it's so ridiculous that not even these brain-donor Rats could believe that the Leader of the Free World is going to go on the Sunday shows and lay out our most precious, elaborate and dangerous intel.

Git rel, people.

Yes, yes, and yes.

You got it, Nightie. Shout it from the rooftops. Or better yet: when the lefties find their Rush Limbaugh, record this message and put it on speed dial to the show.

The reason Daschle is demanding proof the day before the state of the union address is probably because he knows that's what the speech is going to be about. The he can say "I'm so important and that the president has used the state of the union address to reply to my request"

Oh, the freepers, they are on a roll tonight!

"Weasel of Mass Distortion"--this is TOO GOOD.

Hopefully, Rush will pick this up and begin making it stick. You know, he used "Puff" Daschle so long, I began to hear other people, such as I-Man and Dan Abrams, use it.

You GO, Chad!

yes, remember this point, friends: the Rats' alternative plan is exactly what: TO DO NOTHING.

NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING.

Until the next 9/11 happens, and then their plan is to yell like hell that Bush's efforts to protect the nation were a "myth."

Then when Bush does come forward with more evidence, the Rats will wimper that at least he caved to their "demands," albeit imperfectly.

I think HOwlin is right: by tomorrow night, these nincompoops will be irrelevant.

Does anyone really know what time Dasshole thinks it is? Does anyone really care? (apologies to Grand Funk Railroad)
