Democrats demand ‘proof’ from Bush

Daschle, Pelosi sharply assail president on eve of State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 — On the eve of President Bush’s State of the Union address, congressional Democratic leaders challenged the president to show “proof to the world” that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.

Jan. 26 — Presidential aides indicate that Bush’s State of the Union address will deal with a growing federal deficit and will require cuts to some programs. NBC’s Joe Johns reports.

IN WHAT WAS billed as a “pre-buttal” to Bush’s address to Congress and the nation Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the party’s leader in the House, sharply criticized Bush for taking what they said was a “hurry-up approach on Iraq” and charged that he was creating a “credibility gap” by saying one thing and doing another across a range of issues.

“If we have proof of nuclear and biological weapons, why don’t we show that proof to the world — as President Kennedy did 40 years ago when he sent Adlai Stevenson to the United Nations to show the world U.S. photographs of offensive missiles in Cuba,” Daschle said at the National Press Club news conference.

“At a time when we have only just begun to fight the war on terror, the American people deserve to hear why we should put hundreds of thousands of American troops at risk, spend perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars, risk our alliances, and inflame our adversaries to attack Iraq,” said Daschle, D-S.D.

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS CITED

Daschle’s reference to Cuba related to the Cuban missile crisis of four decades ago. At the time, the Kennedy administration unveiled reconnaissance photographs at the United Nations to prove its claim that the Soviet Union had dispatched missiles to an island 90 miles off the United States mainland.

“The state of our union today is anxious,” he said. “The triple threat of war, terrorism and recession are combining to make Americans unsure about their future and unclear about the course our nation is taking.

Pelosi’s criticism of Bush was directed largely at domestic issues, including the president’s proposed elimination of the tax on corporate dividends and his record on the environment.

Pelosi really is out of it. Her speech the other day where she was calling on the Senate to filibuster the nomination of any judge that didn't "affirm a woman's right to choose". Now more of this rhetoric. She will not attract moderates. She could be the poster "person" for liberalism.

Hans Blix just PROVED it for Bush.

Pelosi and Daschle are idiots. If the media weren't a bunch of socialist whores they'd point it out.

*IN WHAT WAS billed as a “pre-buttal”*

No, it was just "butt-head" as usual. I emailed the distinguished Senator D afterward and reminded him of the ever narrowing countdown until GW hits another one out of the park in tomorrow night's speech. I also reassured him that this obvious display of Democrats being scared witless about it was escaping no one.

Pelosi isn't worth the internet time to email her.

I demand that Daschle and Pelosi prove that Saddam doesn't have WMD first. Especially since Saddam won't.

Excellent point, Annie.

Let's start a campaign:

What should we call it:

Opponents of Bush -- Proof that Saddam is Clean of WMD!

>>>...Pelosi is so out of it she is running in circles.

It was reported on another thread that she had two reasons why we shouldn't attack Saddam.

1. There is no proof that he has weapons of mass distruction.

2. We must not put our troops in harms way because Saddam will use weapons of mass didtruction on them and cause a lot of casualties.

This is interesting. I was having a chat conversation with
a friend this morning. And I came to a conclusion and this
article confirms it.

All the anti-war critiques....the protestors, the Dems,
the Euroweenies, the media, etc etc. have simply one
thing in common.

The believe Saddam is telling the truth and
Bush is lying.

And this article confirms this for me.

We are in a pathetic state of affairs if these people
believe a thug, evil, mananical murder over the leader
of the free world.

With this latest development, I'm REALLY looking forward to tomorrow night's SOTU address.

I'm betting that good ole Dubya is going to call their bluff, and lay out a royal flush on national TV.

Haven't they learned by now that George W. Bush is a very cool and cagey cat?

I think we know the answer to that one....

BTW, I have issued the latest edict to our household: Heinz products are no longer allowed. Pity, I kind of enjoyed the mesquite flavored ketchup.

Can't believe the dems would know what to do with proof...they are all so blinded by hatred it wouldn's matter. I mean...what is all this garbage about 'wanting proof' anyway? They certainly didn't want any when billy klinton bombed Iraq. Heck...they didn't even demand the UN give billy its blessings. And for sure they didn't want to see the closeted TRUTH about why billy klinton needed to be thrown out of the WH onto his fat pasty butt during the senate trial (trial ? -lol oh lol).

Besides...they haven't been able to explain to us why our last President didn't take Osama into custody when that filthy arab pig was offered to us---some vision on the part of big fat komrade billy, huh? Some leadership. He, alone, let Osama go forward with the plan to destroy our WTC. What a loser.

What amazes me is how they keep setting themselves up. They do it constantly. They attack W BEFORE the fact and then he comes out and makes it plain that he has considered everything they are attacking him for and has a better plan already in place than anything the dims would come up with, or be trusted to execute, in a million years.

They ought to just shut up already.

Heinz products are no longer allowed

Hard times for the Heinz clan. America realized picante sauce was better than catsup years ago. Sales have been declining for a long time.

Too bad for them; this was their LAST chance to be heard on this issue before the SOTU address.

Unfortunatley for them, all the cable networks cut away from their diatribes to cover something else, so NOBODY heard it.

After tomorrow night, they will be totally irrelevant.

Morality according to Democrats and peaceniks:

All Clinton lied about was sex. Get over it!

All Saddam is lying about are a few weapons of mass destruction. Get over it!

So Clinton and Saddam lied about a few things, so what! George Bush is a greater threat to my children than Saddam Hussein. At least Clinton and Saddam are for reproductive choice for women!

Please comment, Freepers. Is that a fair encapsulation of their position?
