Democrats demand ‘proof’ from Bush

Daschle, Pelosi sharply assail president on eve of State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 — On the eve of President Bush’s State of the Union address, congressional Democratic leaders challenged the president to show “proof to the world” that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.

Jan. 26 — Presidential aides indicate that Bush’s State of the Union address will deal with a growing federal deficit and will require cuts to some programs. NBC’s Joe Johns reports.

IN WHAT WAS billed as a “pre-buttal” to Bush’s address to Congress and the nation Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the party’s leader in the House, sharply criticized Bush for taking what they said was a “hurry-up approach on Iraq” and charged that he was creating a “credibility gap” by saying one thing and doing another across a range of issues.

“If we have proof of nuclear and biological weapons, why don’t we show that proof to the world — as President Kennedy did 40 years ago when he sent Adlai Stevenson to the United Nations to show the world U.S. photographs of offensive missiles in Cuba,” Daschle said at the National Press Club news conference.

“At a time when we have only just begun to fight the war on terror, the American people deserve to hear why we should put hundreds of thousands of American troops at risk, spend perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars, risk our alliances, and inflame our adversaries to attack Iraq,” said Daschle, D-S.D.

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS CITED

Daschle’s reference to Cuba related to the Cuban missile crisis of four decades ago. At the time, the Kennedy administration unveiled reconnaissance photographs at the United Nations to prove its claim that the Soviet Union had dispatched missiles to an island 90 miles off the United States mainland.

“The state of our union today is anxious,” he said. “The triple threat of war, terrorism and recession are combining to make Americans unsure about their future and unclear about the course our nation is taking.

Pelosi’s criticism of Bush was directed largely at domestic issues, including the president’s proposed elimination of the tax on corporate dividends and his record on the environment.

It appears that the Democrats are trying to create the impression that 1) they are trying to force this administration to prove soemthing before going to war thus these democrats calling Bush a liar and dolt are merely doing their job as the opposition, not really aiding the enemy, and 2) they are legitimate alternate choice for running the country and protecting US. Neither is credible, but you have to say 'they're trying' ... to aid the enemy and undermine this administration in as stealthy a way as they think they can get away with. Problematically, will they succeed?

This is becoming a sad state of affairs for a once proud party that 30-40 years ago had true goals and aspirations for the American people (none that I would agree with). But now they are so flabbergasted by the Bush administration they are reduced to making up words (prebuttal) to attack a speech that hasn't been given yet. This is a good example of what happens when you sell your soul to the devil and sell out your constituents for power. They have no agenda but to try to demonize the President; someone who knows who he and where he is going; unlike the democrats. The best response to this kind of lunacy is no resonse; just let them twist in the wind.

Let's begin by revealing the Iraq connection to the Oklahoma City bombing, the first World Trade Center bombing and the destruction of TWA 800. Then add the cash payments to Palestinian families of the suicide bombers/murderers in Israel. Include mention of the connections to Al Queda (Prague, Spain, elsewhere). Finally, wrap it up with a dscussion of all the intelligence about WMD and terror inside Iraq. As Jack said: They can't handle the truth!

I don't get what they have been trying to do. First of all, they claim that the Bush Admin is "rushing" into war. Do a poll on that. Does anyone think the Admin has been "rushing"? I can't imagine a more deliberate pace and process than what we are going through. Second, the libs and the press (same thing, I know) all talk about this so-called "smoking gun." The smoking gun is the data from the last inspections, isn't it? Even old Hans Blix got that right today. We know they had X amount of anthrax. The resolution required Saddam to fess up where it is. He didn't do it. Do a poll on that. If Saddam has enough anthrax to kill 1,000 Americans, and he refuses to obey the UN order to turn it over, should he be forced to?

I just don't get the dims. They seem to be boxing shadows. tilting at windmills, or however the cliche goes. The President IS taking his time, and we DO know what Saddam has, and the inspectors have CONFIRMED what we all knew would happen.

It really is just that simple. I do get it tho. This is not about the war, or smoking guns, or anything else.

This is about liberals hating conservatives and doing anything they can to cause the defeat of President Bush. These people do not have enough confidence in their IDEAS to battle in that arena, so they do what they know; which is to put our nation at risk in order to score political points. These are not Americans-these are win at any cost jerks who like freedom, but don't want to get dirty defending the same.

Opponents of Bush -- Proof that Saddam is Clean of WMD!

I guess you all didn't hear the Iraqi ambassador today, huh?

He stated FIRMLY that in 1998, after he bombed Iraq, Bill Clinton DECLARED that Iraq was, in fact, CLEAR of all destructive weapons.

I swear, he said that.

The one think lacking in all the anti-war articles, spew and speeches is: an alternative. What exactly is their alternative?

The implication is obvious: the same thing the former Democratic president did: NOTHING.

The sad thing is that their opposition to the war appeals to the lowest of human qualities: laziness, selfishness and avoidance of reality (aka wishful thinking).

We are at war with the Islamists since the horror of 9/11, and we have been at war with their main government sponsor, Iraq, since 1991.

Shirking from confrontation will only insure our inevitable destruction, but Daschle and company, so totally bereft of anything resembling integrity, care not about anything other than political power, and would gladly enslave our children and capitulate to dictators to achieve that end. Perhaps they understand Saddam far better than we think.

Knowing how dumb bill clinton was about this whole terrorist and wmd thing, Iraq probably has a signed guarantee from billary that they are certifiably clean and did not have wmd's.

I believe they are, Huck. I believe she is already the marxist leader or icon of the DNC. And the DNC deserves her heinous-they laid this pig and her grubby, out of control dirtbag of a husband upon our nation and now they are dependent upon and stuck with um, forever.

I just laughed when I heard it......I'd love to see a story on that and then see a big old picture of a lot of weapons with a lot of Marines standing around, their feet up on the weapons......and ask Bill Clinton what HE has to say.

I think France, German, and Bill Clinton are ALL criticizing Bush because of the same reason: they're scared to death of what we'll find when we get there.
