I recently finished reading a book for my college class. The book is entitled "Working with Words" and it is by Brian Brooks, James L. Pinson, and Jean Gaddy Wilson.
The book is supposed to teach you the writer how to write using AP style. I was fine with the book until the 13th chapter. The subject drifts completely away from grammer, and the authors go into a unrelated diatribe on racism.
Naturally being a conservative I was very upset by this, and will use this the next time I hear some liberal say that America's colleges aren't left leaning.
I will give you some examples of quotes from the so called "grammer" book. It goes on its own racist tirade giving statistics.
"American does not mean white. American doesn't even mean a citizen of the United States. Instead American refers to someone from North or South America. Period"
"Most unwed teen mothers in the United States are white. One in eight people in the United States was born in another country"
"At least 300,000 illegal immigrants add to the great diversity of our land"
The book then goes on for a page and a half prasing Hillary Clinton. The book also goes on to praise multiculturalism and says that it now defines the United States.
The book then bashes our forefathers, pilgrims, white men in general as being arrogant. It then praises political correctness.
The book then goes on to accuse the Pilgrims on treating children no better than animals, and complains about English Common Law.
It then goes on to talk about how great it is that gays and lesbians are getting more power in the media, and the country. Here is another quote.
"Often, those outside the white power framework are portrayed as villains without human characteristics attributed to default to whites"
It then goes on to talk about how the OKC Bombers were white, and how the press was wrong for looking for Middle Eastern Men in the beginning of the search.
Questions the book wants you to ask yourself before you enter the Broadcasting workforce....
"Have I sought diverse sources for the story?"
"Have I allowed preconceived ideas to limit my efforts to include diversity"
"Am I employing "tokemism" allowing one minority person to represent a community, or am I seeing true diversity"
If you would like to contact any of the authors of the book you may do so.

Education is the first leg of the Axis of indoctrination and propaganda, followed by Hollywood (entertainment) and the mainstream tv and print media being second and third legs to this Axis. Tere is a whole lot of brainwashing to overcome.

"American does not mean white. American doesn't even mean a citizen of the United States. Instead American refers to someone from North or South America. Period"These PC drones forgot about Central America.
Id be OFFENDED and DEMAND an immediate and complete apology along with a refund of my tuition and an A in the class.
Also, glowing references should be given upon graduation to all leading publications to which you seek employment in the interest of diversity.

All by design.
---
The teacher is engaged not simply in the training of individuals, but in the formation of the proper social life, ... in this way the teacher always is the prophet of the true God and the usherer in of the true kingdom of God."
- John Dewey, "father of progressive education," humanist/atheist, 1920's.
To achieve world government, it is necessary to remove from the minds of men their individualism, loyalty to family tradition, national patriotism, and religious dogmas....We have swallowed all manner of poisonous certainties fed us by our parents, our Sunday and day school teachers, our politicians, our priests....The reinterpretation and eventual eradication of the concept of right and wrong which has been the basis of child training, the substitution of intelligent and rational thinking for faith in the certainties of old people, these are the belated objectives...for charting the changes in human behavior.
--Brock Chislholm, 1959 Humanist of the Year and former head of World Health Organization, in the February 1946 issue of Psychiatry
In the January/February, 1983, issue of "The Humanist," John Dunphy proclaimed in an award winning essay: " I am convinced that the battle for humankind's future must be waged and won in the public school classroom by teachers who correctly view their role as the proselytizers of a new faith... The classroom must and will become an arena of conflict between the old and the new; the rotting corpse of Christianity, together with all its adjacent evils and misery, and the new faith of Humanism...
--The Official Journal of the American Humanist Association (1983)
"Every child in America who enters school at the age of five is mentally ill, because he comes to school with an allegiance toward our elected officials, toward our founding fathers, toward our institutions, toward the preservation of this form of government, ... toward their church, toward their parents... All of this proves the children are sick, because the truly well individual is one who has rejected all of those things and is what I would call the true international child of the future....It's up to you teachers to make all of these sick children well by creating the international children of the future."
--Dr. William Pierce, Psychologist, Harvard University, addressing 2000 teachers in Denver, Colorado, 1987.
"Among the elementary measures the American government will adopt to further the cultural revolution are the following: the schools, colleges, and universities will be coordinated and grouped under a National Department of Education and its state and local branches. The studies will be revolutionized, being cleansed of religious, patriotic, and other features of bourgeois ideology."
--William Z. Foster, National Chairman of the United States Communist Party, "Toward a Soviet America"
"Schools will become clinics whose purpose is to provide individualized, psycho-social treatment for the student, and teachers must become psycho-social therapists. This will include biochemical and psychological mediation of learning, as drugs are introduced experimentally to improve in the learner such qualities as personality, concentration, and memory."
--1979, the National Education Association, "Education for the '70's."
"Give me your four year olds, and in a generation I will build a Socialist state."

Just curious, but is this a grammar book or a style guide?
Still an interesting post.

The book is supposed to teach you the writer how to write using AP style. As a newspaper writer, I'm puzzled why the professor perceived a need for this book when he could have used just the AP Style Book. I mean, if you want to learn AP style, why not go to the source?

Thought you might like a ping that Penguin publishers has made my co-author and I a generous offer on our new U.S. history textbook, "Beacon of Liberty: A Patriot's History of the U.S." As you can tell by its title, it is a conservative history "text" (although we will market it as a "trade" book for max sales.
It will be out Oct. 2004!!
