They have to weigh all the political ramifications and then take action. God knows, Trent Lott has given them enough reasons over the years to boot him from the leadership.

SORRY!!!
Should Trent Lott resign as Senate Majority Leader
Anybody who would respond to a Chris Ruddy Newsmax.com poll is going to want Lott out of office.
They're also still not sure if men actually walked on the moon.
Yes. He in effect endorsed past segregation. That is not leadership. (280) 31%
No. He made a mistake but others, including those calling for him to resign, have said far worse. (622) 69%

I am amazed and disgusted at the number of Freepers who don't understand that.
Thank you.
Calling someone a "racist" in 2002 is the equivalent of calling them a Nazi.
I don't know Trent Lott from Adam. In addition, he's not my first choice to lead the Senate.
But I'll be damned if I will participate in crucifying someone as a racist when they are clearly not.
I do that for Trent Lott, and I would do that for you.
Too bad Lott didn't do that huh?
Trent Lott didn't do that. He praised Strom Thurmond.
You are making the tendentious connection to the Dixiecrats, a word Lott never used.
You are convicting Lott of a "thought crime" when you have no idea what he was thinking.
Or does he just spite the black caucus because they are so left they turned communist a long time ago. If this is so I am a racist.
I didn't hear him say anything about the Dixiecrats or segregationists. I heard him talking nice to an old man, trying to say something to make him feel good. I've posted elsewhere that it is kind of like saying nice things about people in the eulogies at their funerals. They may not have been the nicest of people, but you're not going to trash them in front of their families!
Trent was stoking the old man, and making nice for his wife and children! It was no more nefarious than that! This has been blown so far out of proportion that it is ridiculous!
He most certainly did do that. His "joke" (probably one that old time southern politicians have told privately for decades), was intended as PRAISE for the odious segregationist Dixiecrat platform, which, if Thurman had won the day, would have prevented "all these problems we've had."
You can play clintonesque wordgames to your heart's content. I have no doubt in my mind that Lott was PRAISING, not seriously, of course (he's not psychotic), but in a jocular way that is uniquely southern, an old south segregationist political platform.
The Republican Party is the antithesis of the Dixiecrats. Old time Dixiecrats, if they want to be Republican, have to realize that their segregationist views on race relations have been permanently discredited and discarded in disgrace.
