Trent Lott can only win forgiveness by giving a speech talking about the gravity of what he said. He hasn't talked about what a Strom-Thurmond-lead U. S. would have been like. He should. He needs to tell us that he knows that it was a horrible thing to wish Thurmond on us-- that the consequences are unimaginably bad. Giving sop to the race pimps won't do it.

And if we take Thurmond at his word-- that he has left those views behind-- then he is glad he lost in 1948.

You missed the point. Nobody in the Democratic Party is taking Lott's comments that seriously -- they're simply continuing an ongoing race-based assault on conservatives that began years ago.

Lott should simply tell us all that he won't have any further comment on the issue until the Democrats explain to the nation why Ted Kennedy is still a standard-bearer for their party all these years after he killed Mary Jo Kopechne. And then they can explain why they found it acceptable to allow a former KKK leader like Robert Byrd to serve as the Senate majority leader for a decade. And why nobody in the Democratic Party was willing to toss a depraved psychopath like Bill Clinton out of office after he committed crimes that would have landed any ordinary citizen in jail.

No, they are taking them seriously. He has said the same thing in the past and has a history of supporting segregation. Why wouldn't you take him seriously? We aren't talking about "putting food on your family" here.

I wasn't even talking about the "hypocrisy" of the Democrats -- I am pointing out that their views on this issue (AND ANY OTHER ISSUE) are absolutely irrelevant because they clearly have no defined standard of behavior on which to base their views.

Sounds like semantics and what the meaning of 'is' is. The new republican majority's first challenge is to choose new leadership that is representative of the party today. They should follow the lead of their president, who is the reason they have a majority in the first place. Failure to remove Lott from his leadership post before the start of the 208th congress, would be a fatal mistake for the entire republican movement in the United States. (IMO).

His preference for the election of Thurmond over Dewey is sickening and his views aren't welcome in the GOP. He can resurrect the Dixiecrat Party.

The brand of Republicanism, that Dewey represented, was way to the Left of Thurmond, Goldwater & Reagan. It was also to the Left of Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Dole, and both Bushes. It was over Dewey that the term "me too" Republican came into vogue. He offered no change from the New and Fair Deals, only a change in personality.

If you find a preference for a stalwart Conservative over Dewey sickening, that is your privilege. But I do not think you speak for very many Republicans, today, on that. I know that no one appointed you as a gate keeper, to determine whose views are going to be "welcome" in the GOP. Stop this nonsense.

Sean has painted himself into a corner, and IMHO he is too proud to admit he's wrong.

His credibility on this has cratered. He ignores the racial dimension of this, and poo-poos it like it doesn't exist. He is not addressing the issue, but defending Lott tooth and nail.

The interview I saw had Sean "leading the witness" as it were..."Don't you think people should be more forgiving?" etc. He was nodding his head, prodding and poking till Lott gave all the pat answers. For a minute I thought I was watching a female Katie Couric. Not objective at all.

I disagree that he has been "unfairly attacked" by conservatives. Cal Thomas, Thomas Sowell, and Charles Krauthammer have all called for his resignation of the Majority Leadership.

I call for him to step down, with good reason. He is an embarassment and has made racially insensitive remarks in a context of racially questionable associations. He doesn't pass the smell test, and has lost his authority. To leave Lott in his position is politically suicidal, IMHO, and that is the main point.

That is what I call attacking Lott "fairly."
