I think Bush wants to strike Iraq and take out Saddam because he believes a viable threat exists to us and that important region as long as Saddam stands.

Tolkien's point is more complicated. Yes, Tolkien (and CS Lewis) felt the war was necessary. This is made clear in his letters when he lambasts Hitler and refuses to condemn the jews.

Britain forged another ring, there labour parties drift towards socialism. Britain and the west started acting more and more like the enemies they tried to fight against.

Tolkiens point then was dead on. The West was drifting more and more towards socialism. Socialism was power. Power only leads towards oppression.

Instead of destroying the ring, the power of collectivism, we embraced it. In that respect the west was like Boromir.

Tolkien hated socialism, he hated big government, and he hated materialism. He was a committed conservative and I believe would have supported the war on radical islam.

I think Tolkien makes this point clear when he contrasts Faramir with Boromir. Boromir wanted to use the power of the ring against Sauron like many in the west. Faramir realized that the ring was evil, that power was evil and it must be destroyed.

Tolkien was not anti-war as he was simply pointing out that we were heading down the same dark path that led Russia and Germany towards oppression.

I was of course trying to deal with the heartbreaking conspiracy that Al Gore was eloquently airing, "Why is the media keeping silent on Brittany's opinion about the war?" You don't see it on Fox, or any of Rupert Murdock's vast rightwing network. And the Brittany "coverup" (even saying it is tough) has everyone on pins and needles. When will her statement be released? And why has it taken so long to get "coverage"?

But you are absolutely right, we need to think of freepers and freeperettes! Any Baywatch pictures would be appreciated. Hey, I think Anne Coulter would be nice too!

Excellent point...and the US oil companies have not only made the lifestyle Veggo enjoys possible, they have done it more efficiently than any other nation could have, keeping the cost far below what it could be.

I have often enough heard that American Mid-East policy has been created by a Zionist conspiracy but I wonder if this is some sort of mis-direction. What if, rather than Zionists manipulating U.S. foreign policy, it's actually the U.S. that is manipulating Israeli internal and external policy by means of surrogates (such as Sharon)?

In any event, I applaud your opposition to George and Dick's Excellent Adventure. Iraq had not been our enemy until George I decided that it was in our national interest to intrude in the Iraq-Kuwait War. All of Saddam's subsequent (alleged) involvement in anti-U.S. terrorism can be viewed as a response to what he perceives as our reversal of policy towards him, and the subsequent war and blockade. Saddam was, essentially, blind-sided by a friend.

The war party at FR have become as noxious and shrill as the Democrats who were supporting the U.S. attack on Serbia during the Clinton administration. It just goes to show that it really isn't the principle of the thing; it's whether the people in charge have an "R" or "D" after their names. I have no doubt at all that if George II were ever caught in flagrante de licto with an intern, the same people who called (justifiably) for the impeachment and conviction of Clinton would now (for the good of the nation, of course) insist that we "move on." The hypocrisy is palpable.

Oh, and another thing . . .
When James Woods came out against the Clintons, I didn't hear a peep about "Yeah, well what does he know? He's only an actor!" Now, this Viggo fella speaks up and there are calls to boycott the Tolkien film. I am surprised that the title of the thread is not "An Insult to Tolkein, America, and God."

Grow some thicker skin. I am just messing with you, and not very much at that. Exactly what kind of person am I? As far as I know, we have never met, here or otherwise.

There is NOTHING vague about the effect on society that a damaged oil economy would cause. I still am not convinced that the war with Iraq really has a whole lot to do with oil other than the regional stability issue in the ME.
