Acid attacks sour US passion for 4x4s

No vehicle in the United States provokes greater controversy than the sport utility vehicle (SUV), the bulky four-wheel drive that has sold in record numbers. Now it has become the target of acid-like chemical attacks by environmentalists. More than 30 SUVs in the Richmond, Virginia, area have been attacked with chemicals and hatchets over the past few weeks and had their tyres slashed. The initials ELF (Earth Liberation Front) were found after some of the attacks.

In a statement posted on its website, the ELF said that although it had "not received a communique from the cell operating in the area, graffiti and notes left at targets are legitimate claims of responsibility and indicate the Earth Liberation Front is involved in these actions. ELF actions are a reminder to SUV owners of how their personal choices affect the society and environment in which they live".

The ELF said that the SUVs were targets because their drivers "contribute to the degradation of the environment at a much greater rate than those who drive smaller vehicles - or don't drive at all".

A total of 3.8 million SUVs were sold in 2001, up from 2.8 million in 1998. There are now 20 million on American roads.

Environmentalists claim that they pollute the atmosphere at a rate five times higher than that of ordinary cars, use 33% more petrol than smaller cars and are anti-social because it is harder for other motorists to see past them on the road.

They are also three times more likely to cause fatal injuries in road accidents because they are so heavy.

My blood is boiling.

It's time to park a few SUVs in some likely areas, and wait in concealment for these terrorists to show.

Then it's time to break some kneecaps with a ballpeen hammer.

"No vehicle in the United States provokes greater controversy than the sport utility vehicle (SUV)

Is is a pseudo-controversy invented by fascist wackos and given legitimacy by a liberal press.

"They are also three times more likely to cause fatal injuries in road accidents because they are so heavy"

This is especially unfair to liberals because the driver and passengers in SUVs are safer and those in smaller vehicles get crunched! It's no faiiiiiiiiiir - what a world, what a world. So why don't the wackos start demanding that tractor-trailer rigs be banned because they are also big and dangerous? Why don't they demand that stretch limos be banned because they use too much gas and it's not fair that some people like celebrities, athletes, politicians, corporate executives and rich liberals can afford them but the rest of us can't?

I certainly hope so-and if some apparently helpless 'little old lady' in a fur coat were to ventilate a few red paint throwing antifur activists, that would be just as sweet. I am so sick of these selfrighteous, sanctimonious scum.

I usually use a Makita cordless drill motor and a 3/8" drill bit. Zips right through a knee or elbow. And they remember it.

The website doamin is registered to someone. Easy to track the owner down. I'd prosecute him under RICO....

It would be a real crying shame if similar acts were perpetrated upon the ELF members! I would really hate hybrid cars to be tageted. Fortunately, SUV owners are law abiding for the most part. I know people in VA, and these idiots who do not respect other's property will be in for a serious dose of WHUPASS!! I can see them crying now....

Beautiful! The drivers around SoCal with SUVs happen to be liberal yuppies, and they would be SHOCKED, SHOCKED that they have been identified as pro BigOil. If their precious car got vandalized like this, the clipped hair blondes would break down in confused tears. I hope this thing spreads all over America, because the left is self destructing, and it's fun to watch.

I'm not big on law suits -- but I would LOVE to see the SUV owners get together and bring a MASSIVE class-action suit against ELF !!

BTW -- we own a mid-size Toyota and a small KIA -- great gas-mileage and cheap ! With 2 kids in college, we can't afford a big SUV but I do think they're nice vehicles (esp. in winter) -- and most important ! FREE people should be allowed to drive whatever the heck they want !!

My thoughts exactly! When is law enforcement going to get serious with these idiots!

I'm in favor of the death penalty for vandalism to ones' vehicle. It is, after all, a member of the family. :)

They are also three times more likely to cause fatal injuries in road accidents because they are so heavy.

On the contrary, it is the smaller cars that are three times more likely to cause fatal road injuries in road accidents, because they are so light. You are much safer in an SUV.

Exactly! It is a matter of self-defense. Some prefer to protect themselves and their families by driving a vehicle that would have the best chance of surviving a collision with another vehicle. And if that someone really cares about their family, they will drive in a cautions manner as well, taking into consideration the physics of the larger, taller vehicle.
