Does that mean I would no longer be getting free tax preparation software from my mutual funds every year? In that case, I'm against it!

For a moment there, I thought you had wandered in from DU...

Would a national sales tax apply to services or just goods? Also, how would duty-free goods, food items perhaps, affect the debate?
To: PhilipFreneau
It will never get done otherwise. The rebates I am talking about will apply to every man, woman, and child equally. The way I look at it if you eliminate by rebate a tax on the necessities of life, the argument can be made that the more you spend, the more tax one pays. One pays taxes according to the benefits he reaps from the society. There are only three things one can do with money--invest it, save it, or spend it. The first two create jobs and/or make money available for others to create jobs. The last creates jobs. Who can argue with that. Cutting off contributions to charity will be strongly opposed too. By letting people assign their rebates, this opposition can be overcome.

A flat tax is better, preferably if we can keep the 401(k)Wake up people! A 401K is just an investment account that is protected from THE INCOME TAX. If there is no income tax, then effect EVERY ACCOUNT YOU HAVE IS A 401K!

"We could probably get around the 16th amendment by removing funding from the IRS -- thats how they kill bills and programs."Is there a way to amend the Amendment? Wouldn't "deratification" of the Amendment require a Constitutional Convention? Just curious.

Now that would be some bold leadership.

"This is how we sell the idea to Ralph Nader!!!
Well... his followers at least...
... well... who cares... they don't vote or pay taxes anyway... :)
They *will* pay taxes if this thing flies!

My greatest concern? A NRST will be implemented, but they'll keep at least part of the income tax. And then the income tax will slowly creep back up. And we'll have the worst of BOTH worlds.HR2525 does away with the IRS and all records they hold.

There wasn't any point to them bringing it up again since there was no chance of even debating it in the Senate, let alone passage into law.
To: ladyjane
i was saying that by your argument, it sounds like the dims WOULD support it, since its going to net them so much to spend on vote buying programs, according to your argument...

Cigarettes are far more of a black market commodity than you would believeSo Canada is only charging 20% in taxes? That is my point....

seems were al brainwashed and unnerved by the presence of the income tax, like we cant imagine life without it.

Yeah George! We got out the vote yesterday, and we're about to start seeing the benefits of all the hard work!
To: Bigun; CHIEF negotiator
I've been watching this since it started, Bigun.
I know someone else who's watching, too, but he's got a much better perspective on it than we can have.

What do you think your house will be worth if you have to pay a sales tax when you sell it HR2525 exempts all used items. Your house might drop in price do to the expected drop in cost for new homes.

...Scrapping the IRS and income tax code is all well and fine, but realize that the 16th amendment will have to be repealed first...If we scrap the tax code and send IRS agents packing, who exactly will tax our income? It was supposed to be voluntary in the first place. All they need to do is give us permission to sign a form that we no longer volunteer.
To: spokeshave
Scrap the IRS but have a single low low rate like in Russia. and a postcard size form to complete. I'd rather not file anything.
NOT a "sales tax" try 17% or more on EVERY transaction from raw materials to consumer....why you think Europe is stagnating (VAT on everything)
Nope. Try being taxed one time at retail. And the store gets paid for collecting.
Only new stuff is taxed.
Buy a used house, no tax. Buy a used car, no tax.
Prebates to poverty level so poor folk don't pay it. Nor do the rich folk, but only to poverty level. Bill Gates and all rich folk can have the prebate every month.
And IRS's records are shredded and they can go to work for Border Patrol!
