Ex-GOP Sen. Hopeful Arrested in N.J. (James Treffinger)

NEWARK, N.J. Oct. 28 — Essex County's top elected official, who dropped out of the U.S. Senate race this year amid a federal investigation, was arrested by FBI agents Monday on corruption charges.

The charges against County Executive James Treffinger include extortion, mail fraud, conspiracy and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Perry A. Carbone. Extortion carries the heaviest penalty, up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Treffinger will plead not guilty, said his lawyer, Henry Klingeman.

I would have been happy had they found any Republicans who committed perjury and obstruction of justice and thrown them out of office TOO. I don't like crooks and I don't care which side of the aisle they come from.

Dems never get arrested for these types of things and we know the shenanigans they pull. It wouldn't surprise me to find that the one or two (perhaps more but not nearly as many Repubs are crooked as Dems) Republican crooks are thrown in jail.

NJ is an extremely corrupt state. The Republican machine there is no better than the Rat machine. The GOP establishment turned their back on Schundler, and are now doing likewise with Forrester.

The REPUBLICANS pulled the same crap last year when Bret Schundler was running in the primary against Acting Governor Donald D. "Donnie D." DiFiasco.

DiFiasco dropped out due to corruption rumors and the REPUBLICANS violated the law and extended the Primary date to the end of June so their newly appointed candidate, Bob Franks, could campaign and get name recognition.

Well, it backfired giving Schundler more time to get his message out. Bret won the Primary and the REPUBLICANS hosted meet and greets for............. McSleazy. Yep, they campaigned against him.

I didn't say for him to interfere and he did not. The evidence was presented to the grand jury. The USA waited 24 weeks for this indictment, I think the people of America could have slept safely and soundly if the BUSH/Christie team would have waited one more week for a total of 25 weeks. I wasn't hiding under my bed in fear of Mr. Treffenger escaping from his home and leaving the country. And I doubt it if you were.

And we wonder why republicans lose elections.

They both, Bush and Christie, should had enough common sense to wait only one more week! Treffenger wasn't going anywhere. He's home in Verona doing nothing.

After a 7-year investigation, Democrat Judge Lawrence Walsh, Independent counsel hired to investigate the Iran-Contra affair, gave his report 3 days before the Bush 41/Clinton election. You see that was smart, Walsh was a Democrat. What Bush 43/Christie did yesterday was VERY DUMB.

You’ll excuse me if I trouble ginning up any sympathy for Mr. Treffinger:

Federal authorities said they secretly recorded Treffinger saying he hoped to secure a presidential appointment as U.S. attorney for New Jersey, vowing to squelch the probe into his campaign activities and turn a blind eye on political corruption.

"He tried to obtain the highest federal law enforcement office in the state with the express purpose of breaking the law," U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said at a news conference Monday afternoon. "Unfortunately, this is another sad day for politics in this state."

Maybe they could have arrested him sooner, but I see no reason to wait any longer. If the GOP in New Jersey is comfortable with politicians like Treffinger, they don’t really deserve to win any elections. Neither do the Democrats, of course, but I hold them to a lower standard, and don’t wish to join them there.

Treffenger deserves what he gets and I never supported him in either of the two Senatorial primaries in which he was running. The GOP is not comfortable with politicians like Treffenger and I did not say that. I am talking about this issue from an "election standpoint." And one more week wouldn't have mattered. Republicans like to lose elections and be the doormat for the democrat party.

Not to get off topic but when the repubs had control of the Senate, they approved all, but a few, of Clinton's judicial appointments roughly 373 of them with their tails between their legs. Now Bush is president and what do the democrats do to reciprocate, nothing, they won't approve Bush's nominees. The republicans turned into a bunch of wimps always afraid of the polls and the press. Let's see how hard Forrester debates tomorrow. Let's see how many times Forrester uses the words, Left wing and liberal. Where's his commercials attacking Lautenberg? Who really gives a crap about Tom Kean, a man working with McGreevey?

If standard procedure dictates an arrest at this point in the investigation, that's exactly what should happen. If we found that Bill Clinton instructed Janet Reno to withhold the results of an ongoing investigation so as to benefit the Dems, we'd all be irate. And rightly so.

It cannot be any different when we're talking about the GOP's actions.

Treffenger is back to work at his job as Essex County Executive. As I said, no big deal, terrible timing. One of these days the republicans will learn how to win elections.

Now when an uninformed voter goes to vote, he will remember Senate candidate Republican Treffenger getting arrested and then go in and vote for Lautenberg.

No, I've been wide awake. I didn't like Reno's manipulation, and I apply the exact same standards to the GOP. "They did it first" isn't a very good excuse for interference with criminal investigations.
