I can't believe the US Attorney, a Bush appointee, and Bush himself were DUMB enough to do this with only ONE week before a close election.

The world wouldn't have come to an end if the US Attorney would have waited one more week. It was very stupid and hindsighted for them to do what they did. This was a 6-month, 24-week investigation, one more week wouldn't have mattered. As a matter of fact the investigation is continuing on this man and others. It was a very bad political move.
