What is signifigant- perhaps critical and unique- about this election is how these stories appeared before the election. Normally, they surface too late to do anything about them.

You're up late.

Well, howdy, Lurker- actually, I'm up early. My old dog is finally feeling the heavy hand of age upon her, and has taken to nosing me up at 2 or 3 to go out. We used to habitually rise at 4 back when I had the wrecker service, to get a jump on being on Dawn Patrol, so I'm not averse to early rising... at least in theory.

Lord A'mighty, I just looked at the clock- almost time to drag the wife-unit out of bed and shoo her off to the salt mines... they got a tracked excavator bogged down and about to fall into the river out there yesterday, and my "professional opinion as a recovery specialist" was "you better find a bulldozer heavier that that trackhoe and start winching..."

My best to you, Lurker-- I saw a few of your comments on the JBR posts ( regarding the Polly Klaus murder )-- my wife had one of her best friends murdered at an all-night liquor store down the street from here, and to this day she avoids going that way. People sometimes forget that in the real world, actions have irredeemable consequences, and events like those touch people in ways that can't be pigeonholed, or predicted.

I saw a report- somewhere, a long time ago- that claimed for each single person who was murdered, a minimum of 20 more were permanently impacted by it.

There's the old Jewish saying that he who saves one life saves the world entire.

That must mean that the converse of that is true as well.

All I know is that anyone who could commit a cold blooded murder is someone who needs to be removed from society in the most permanent way possible. That's especially true of those who murder children.

It's not possible for me to express my absolute hatred and contempt for such people. I know my wife was pretty permanently affected by the events of that night. We have alarms, dogs, firearms, pepper spray, surveillance cameras, and a very large cat with a bad attitude and my wife still doesn't much like being at home alone nights.

Can't say I blame her. Some 17 year old creep slashed a cab drivers throat right in front of my house a couple of years back. Oh they caught the little criminal genius right away. It seems the cabbie picked him up at his parents house.

But it affected the entire neighborhood. We hold Neighborhood Watch meetings two or three times a year and that event still comes up.

What a world....

You have a fine day sir.

Yes, that's one reason I stand watch here, and keep a shotgun handy- some events change a person fundamentally, and they are never quite the same afterwards.

A good day to you, and yours, Lurker.

Do Electronic Voting Machines Pose A Threat To Democracy?

Most of the opposition to electronic voting machines comes from the same lunatic left that insisted on replacing punch ballots with high-tech solutions in the wake of the 2000 presidential election. To a nation sick of hearing about pregnant, dimpled, and hanging chads, this appeared to be a good investment in electoral confidence. Now, however, touch-screen voting and the venerable Diebold corporation appear at the center of every paranoid conspiracy theory, the latest version of which came from Cynthia McKinney after Hank Johnson beat her like a bass drum in a marching band.

Marc Danziger argues in today's Washington Examiner that we should not leave the issue with just the conspiracy theorists. He says that electronic voting machines are far less secure than the average nickel slot in Laughlin, a situation that should concern all voters:Posted by Captain Ed at 06:31 AM | Comments (34)  "The track record and evidence is clear. The dems at this time are the party of stuffed ballot boxes, no voter ID, and systematic efforts to delegitimze election results."

--here is what my 10 seconds of research turned up for "stolen elections" http://www.google.com/search?q=stolen+election&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

And "voter fraud" http://www.google.com/search?hs=QAu&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=voter+fraud&btnG=Search

You will note a distinct lack of links to REPUBLICANS on the front pages of these searches. Thats why its a left-right issue. The left is making so much noise about it "stolen elections."

Princeton prof hacks e-vote machine--Does this mean we can go back to punch cards?
And can elections boards across the nation sue the DNC for a refund?
Seriously, electronic voting, paper receipt, put into a locked box after being verified by the voter.
Setting up the "election fraud by Diebold" talking point in case they don't take control of Congress in November.

GIZMODO has a post, and video, on how to steal an election with a Diebold voting machine.

While I think that most of the "stolen election" claims are a mix of sour grapes and conspiracy theory, I think that we'd be much better off going to a more secure voting method, in order to forestall such corrosive charges. This isn't perfect, as there are other ways to steal an election, but it can't hurt.

Princeton Prof. Stirs Up E-Voting Controversy [Voting Machine Fraud]--These voting machines are the result of the Dem attack on all the existing voting techniques after the Gore debacle. Now they have systems in place across the country which they can attack as insecure and inaccurate when any election doesn't go their way. Watch and see, this will even happen in elections which are not close. Problems with Diebold machines go way back as this three year old article points out.  And here's a link to Professor Felten's paper.

Major Problems At Polls Feared --The real crime in the Florida Elections was when Gore gained several thousand votes on the second electronic count. If you know anything about statistics you know this was quite impossible. When dealing with votes by the millions the votes a candidate picks up and loses on the second counting of the ballot cards (actually computer punch cards) will cancel each other out. That second count should have resulted in each candidate actually losing a few votes as each run of the cards will damage a few. They should lose in equal percentages. There's an excellent thread posted here about it by PianoMan: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/568829/posts
