Gimme a Border Patrol Volunteer Reserve, where American men not serving in the military can be trained to assist the Border Patrol in some sort of supervised support capacity. We could serve two week shifts once or twice a year.

Good point. Long-term having troops on our borders is an inordinately costly and inefficient use of manpower. However, it is only because the crisis of illegal immigration has been allowed to get so out of hand that the military has now become the only realistic stop gap measure before permanent solutions can be phased in.
Another powerful reason to have the military on the borders is to “reduce” the possibility that terrorists will capitalize on our lax border control and slip into the country undetected. It is incredible that our borders remain inadequately protected when so many terrorists from around the world are plotting for our destruction.
During WWII when we were at war, we had troops on the border and on major bridges, etc., within this country. This just makes sense. This is an international border, and our borders are the first line of defense - so it is very much the province of the military and I believe they can and would do the job given them if our leaders would get a little backbone and do it.
Our President could greatly reduce the need for the military if he would only start speaking out against this and stop encouraging their coming. Let's take the laws we have and enforce them in each and every way possible.

As for "inept," the military is very good at visiting the wrath of the United States upon our nation's enemies, and being ready to do so. This mission does not fit that profile, and that means the military will not perform it very well.
As for "corrupt," are you seriously arguing that all military personnel are sonehow magically immune to greed?
Unlike the former Soviet Union, the drug lords and their hangers-on can pay REAL money in return for a blind eye over a certain stretch of the border at a certain time.
Let's just discharge all of them and forget any protection.

We didn't have a multi-gazillion dollar drug smuggling business, nor did we have a significant illegal immigration problem at the time. (The modern illegal alien problem is a direct result of shutting down the bracero program in 1965--which was done by the Democratic party as a favor to their AFL-CIO buddies.) It was also during a state of declared war. We also had a little thing called a "draft" to sort out the manpower allocation issues.

It's obvious that you do not understand (a) what the military is, (b) what they do well, (c) what they don't do well, and (d) the unintended consequences of using the military for peacetime law enforcement.
As for your contention: if this really is a military problem, then it needs to be solved, not perpetuated.

A massive invasion by a hostile foreign nation is an "emotional issue"? I would hope so. It's also an issue that the military ought to be dealing with, along with getting rid of the millions of colonists from that hostile nation who have been setting up shop here for years. I don't really care what methods are used to accomplish this. Rolling over and giving up isn't acceptable.

I agree. Illegal labor is like illegal drugs, if you don't cut of the demand you will have hard time cutting off the supply. If some of these folks that hire illegals had to stand for 4 days with their ears nailed to the pillory, I think the demand for illegal labor would decrease a bit.
You're visualizing US troops acting as INS agents or Border Patrol officers. That isn't the mission. The mission is a closed border. No more foot traffic across the border for tourisnm or day labor or any other purpose for that matter. With the military doing the border patrolling, the domestic LEs can do their job at certified crossing points for truck traffic which would be delivering to consolidation points for transfer to US trucks anyway.
BP and INS is overwhelmed and needs to be reassigned to their proper role, controlling the checkpoints. We're facing an invasion of mostly unarmed workers being sent here by their country's politicians. They could be stopped quickly by the message delivered to Mexican diplomats once the troops are in place to demonstrate that the diplomats are delivering a serious message.

With all due respect Sabertooth, I think the military, at least for the next few years, is in a much more productive role on our borders than doing exercises in their forts around the country or in babysitting missions throughout the world in places like Japan, Germany etc.
The troops won't be leaving Japan or Germany anytime soon. Clinton decimated our military. We're at war.
Bottom line: we don't have the men to man the border, we need volunteers.
Furthermore, increased manpower along the border, regardless of how you achieve it, won't stop the flood so long as we fail to deport Illegals in significant numbers from the American interior.
