The ex-wife of a former Hutchinson teacher told jurors Monday she had no knowledge her husband was involved with one of his male students.
Shelli Roberts, the former wife of fired McCandless Elementary teacher Bret Roberts, said she suspected her husband of affairs with adult men, but never with "anyone underage."
Shelli Roberts was one of the first witnesses on the stand Monday in the Reno County District Court trial of Bret Roberts, charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child.
The 39-year-old Bret Roberts is accused of an alleged "long-term" relationship with a McCandless student.
"Until the officer told me differently, I didn't think Bret had done that with an underage boy," Shelli Roberts said. "Did I suspect a male, an adult male? Yes."
Married for 16 years with two children, Shelli Roberts testified about her ex-husband's penchant for wanting to be left alone while he used his computer.
"I never thought it was anything sexual," she said. "I thought he was typing something he didn't want me to see. . . . He was talking to teen-age boys. I believed he was helping them."
Then, Shelli Roberts said, her husband told her he "liked to be around teen-age boys.
"He said he understood them," she said.
Her suspicions were confirmed by a computer disk she discovered while putting away her husband's socks.
The disk, District Attorney Keith Schroeder said, contained graphic sexual images, including one he described in detail that drew shocked looks from jurors.
Roberts, a tenured teacher employed by the school district since Aug. 23, 1995, was suspended in November and fired shortly thereafter.
The action was taken for failing to maintain proper relationships with students and misuse of school equipment.
Roberts was arrested by Hutchinson police in late November, moments after being released from Hutchinson Hospital after a failed suicide attempt.
The trial continues today with further testimony from prosecution witnesses.

Put away that slide rule Mr. Roberts!
Give him a second chance or a third if he needs it.
Well, remember how I-X42 counseled troubled young women.
What? How can that be?? Aren't fags supposed to be just bursting with PRIDE in their wonderful adopted lifestyle? Why such severe misgivings from this pervert? Da mind boggles...
WHAT IS THE PREVALENCE OF SEX WITH CHILDREN AMONG PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS? Hint: it is a greater problem among them than among Catholic priests, but the sheeple won't know that if the press doesn't collect and report the national data -- as they gleefully have with Catholics.
WHAT BEARING DOES THIS HAVE ON THE BOY SCOUTS? Hint: though child molestors gravitate to places where they can find victims (schools, scouts), the incidence is far less in the Scouts because they throw out homosexual adults when they find out about them. But that's not "politically correct." The press can't report that.
This is a tragic story, and the wife is clearly a chowderhead. She said she thought her husband was "helping the boys." Yeah. Exactly the same way that Billyjeff Clinton was "helping" Monica Lewinsky. Hillary! said she didn't know, either....
But more tragic is the abject refusal of the press to give the CONTEXT of this story. Total numbers, proportions, relationships to "sexual orientation." These facts on a national scale are ALSO part of this story.

What a sick woman. How does one have an "affair" with a minor when one is 39-years-old?
And what's the charge? "Two counts of indecent liberties with a child"? What does that mean? Is this an example of recent attempts to euphemize all of the shock and horror out of the sexual abuse of children?

I must be very old-fashioned. If my husband didn't want me around while he was at the computer, I'd suspect him of chatting with a female. If I thought he was having an affair, again I'd suspect a woman. Instead this woman is bawling about "I thought he was having affairs with MEN, not boys!" Yeesh. Just because she's divorced now doesn't mean she ever had a brain in her head.
