Arafat's problem is ANYTHING that would cause a cessation to the fighting. When fighting stops, Arafat is of no use. A non-person. His entire life is defined by violence. To a pathological person like Araflat, goals must NEVER be achieved, only pursued. The achievement of ANY of his goals may be a win for Palestinians, but is a giant personal loss for him. When peace breaks out, Araflat ceases to exist.

Report: Arafat refuses to hand over prisoners to US, British jailers

Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat is reportedly refusing to hand over two senior figures holed up within his Ramallah command center to British and American jailers.

Ahmed Saadat, head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine involved in the assassination of late cabinet minister Rehavam Ze'evi, and Fuad Shubaki, mastermind of the Karine A weapons smuggling plot, remain inside the compound at this time.

Israeli and foreign journalists outside Arafat's compound continue to wait for the transfer of Saadat and Shubaki and four more Palestinian convicts into American and British custody.

The four others were involved in the assassination of Ze'evi in Jerusalem Hyatt Hotel last October.

According to an agreement reached between Israel and the Palestinians, with the assistance of the United States, the six will be transferred to a prison in Jericho where they will be supervised by American and British officials.

Israeli military sources said Arafat changed his mind at the last minute and is now refusing to hand over the two senior figures, Israel Radio reported.

Disagree. Arafat is now completely exposed as a liar. His unwillingness to release even these criminals gives Bush a perfect opportunity to exclude him from any further dealings.

I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I think it was Yasser's last chance and he blew it.

To the contrary, nothing would be better than having the world see Arafat renege on a deal personally negotiated by Bush. It gives Bush all the amunition in the world to say that he has made an strong effort to promote peace, that he was able to twist Sharon's arm into accepting a deal he didn't like, but that ARAFAT wouldn't compromise or negotiate in good faith. Now that Bush has this chip, it is time to put Arafat and the rest of the PA out to pasture. Now Bush can say to the world "My experience with Chairman Arafat is that he does not want to resolve this issue, he does not want peace."

It all depends on whether Bush has the backbone to stand with the IDF togo in and do what needs doing. After that picture show with the clown prince in Texas, I really don't know where Bush is getting his advice.

To give Clinton his due, in December 2000 his negotiators gave Arafat a sweetheart deal that the Israelis accepted. Arafat reneged on that agreement and things have only escalated since then. It seems that each recent President has to learn personally that terrorists of whatever stripe can not be trusted to keep their word. If Bush keeps trying to forge a peace with people that have no honor or scruples, their dirt will eventually end sticking to him.

According to reports, Arafat changed his mind regarding the agreement that had been reached earlier in the day.

Imagine what it must be like to have to deal with these people every day. It must take a highly motivated Jew to want to move to Israel and subject themselves to neighbors like Arafat. I honestly don't know how they do it.
