It's not the supposed historical significance that impresses me. For months this has been thought of as a done deal according to the Oscar buzz out here in LA, not because of the quality of her performance but because Berry desperately wanted an Oscar for some film, any film, and campaigned strenuously for it. The historical significance only showed up recently in the Oscar talk when the voting began; who could vote against her in that case?Lots of people "campaign" for Oscars and don't get them. Let's face it- history was made tonight for no Black ever won an Oscar for best actress. That's significant to many.

All humans have equal potential. Any difference among peoples is purely cultural.

The racial dynamics of German vs, Swede are completely different than Black vs. White- no comparison. That's why I think it is important to not perpetuate such unreal divisions. That this artificial division into black/white forms part of our culture is no reason to keep it going.
Just curious. Would you equally accept her decision if she had decided to reject her black father and self-identify as white? If not, why not?

Well at least Hanks was fast!

It looks like the Academy agrees with you...

Okay, when is "The View" after-party starting??? Zzzzzz....
To: StarFan
Nah, I figured the libs would go for their own in Altman.

I think Halle Berry is talented but I didn't care for Valerie's contention that race should have something to do with itI didn't say anything about race having anything to do with her award - I said her speech about race was inappropriate UNLESS she won just because of her race. Why accept for a whole race when you've won an award for your own individual achievement? I also said her beauty was dependent on her racial mix.
