Want to buy a gun in New Jersey ?? It's way too easy, according to the Anti-Gun lobbyists ! All you need is:
1. Application,completely filled out.
2. Two (2) References.
3. Mental Health Form signed.
4. Copy of Driver's License.
5. One (1) State Fingerprint Card.
6. One (1) FBI Fingerprint Card.
7. $ 49.00 Money Order, payable to: NJ State Police- SBI.
8. $ 5.00 Cash for ID Card.
9. $ 2.00 Cash for each Handgun Purchase Permit.
If you can pass official scrutiny, you will be issued a Firearms Purchaser's ID Card-which must be presented to ( and recorded by ) the Seller, before you can purchase a rifle, shotgun, or airgun. If you are planning to buy a pistol or revolver, you will also need a Handgun Purchase Permit.
These documents allow you to purchase a firearm; they do not authorize you to carry a handgun beyond the confines of your residence or business.
If you are transporting a rifle or shotgun-to the range or the game fields-the weapon must be unloaded, securely csaed, and stored in a part of the vehicle not readily accessible to the driver.
You may not own or possess any ammunition with soft nose, or hollow point bullets.Solid lead is OK;FMJ is OK.( Only shotguns are permitted on the game fields-magazine capacity limited to 3 rounds-total; no "pumpkin balls" , saboted rounds, or rifled slugs. )
Don't even think about owning any semi-automatic weapon with a magazine capacity exceeding 10 rounds ! ( This includes .22's )A special Assault Weapon Permit must be obtained...and is almost never granted. )
Any attempts to modify NJ gun laws, or make them semi-rational, are met by a Media hue and cry , and concerted, determined efforts to drive the politician(s) responsible out of office for all time.
So, you say, there must be just about zero gun crime in New Jersey. Let's put it this way : law-abiding, gun-owning citizens seldom commit crimes of violence. They never did. Criminals, on the other hand, buy all the guns they want - on the street - and engage regularly in " drive-bys ", robberies ,murders, etc. If they get caught, they get mandatory additional prison time...which sounds tough until you realize it adds ( at best ) a week or two to their parole ineligibility period !
Sheesh. Glad I don't live in New Jersey; though I don't own a gun most of the people I spend time with do. It makes me feel nice and safe. Why exactly would anyone want to live in that state?
Can you just register as a criminal?
It would save alot of time.
10. Your great-grandmother's maiden name
11. Two (2) certificates of "bullet" knowledge
12. A lock for your firearm
13. A lockable case to put your firearm in
14. A lockable cabinet to put your locked firearm in it's
lockable case, inside.
15. A lock box for the key to your locked gun that's inside
the locked case, inside the locked cabinet.
16. A securely locked area in which to keep your lock box
holding the key to your locked firearm, that's inside the
locked box, inside the locked case.
17..........
(what was that amendment again?)

(I guess this means I'm disqualified from gun ownership in Joisey?)
I believe we could already be occupied - judging from the terrorist addresses and the anthrax central thing going on in PRNJ!
There are pockets of resistence, but as you can see by the thread topic, it's a challenge to keep your rights!
BTW I live in New York
Private sale: no rules
Gun show: 1) pay Sheriff $5 for background check, 2) Sheriff does instant on-line background check, 3) if background check okay, you give Sheriff another $5 for permit, 4) Sheriff gives you permit to buy gun. Total cost, $10; total time, 5 minutes. Then, you can be the proud owner of a good tool for doing "social work".
While the entire process was fairly "painless", it still irks me that many people (especially those who live in high crime areas) can not possibly afford all this nonsense (and let's not forget the price of the gun and ammo..) and the FACT that the phrase "shall not be infringed" has evidently lost all meaning. Really, I think that's the part that sticks in my craw the most - the lack of adherence to Constitutional principles that EVERYONE understood up until roughly the 1950s. Guess it took THAT long for all the socialistic, dumbing-down in the publik skools to start to take hold....
So does the phrase "keep and bear arms." What gives states the right to infringe upon a person's constitutional right to bear arms? New Jersey is composed mainly of these types of individuals:
(1) Minorities and other slaves of the Welfare State who are the primary victims of gun violence and who are ignorant enough to believe gun laws will protect them.
(2) Misguided soccer moms.
(3)Fourth and fifth generation Democrats (including Irish and Italian Catholics) who blindly follow the party line.
(4) Lawyers (who think a right to abortion can be gleaned from a penumbra of privacy rights but who find no constitutional support for the right to keep and bear arms).
(5) Jews who believe only the State should have guns.
(6) Teachers and public school administrators.
Sorry if I offend anyone. I fit into at least one of those categories myself.
And, in the county I lived in (Humboldt) CCW was essentially "shall-issue." I think it may not be that way now, though, because the new sheriff is a liberal.
Still, I'm glad to be out of California, and in a state where shall-issue is the law of the land.
