[history]
Afghan opposition forces captured the strategic northern town of Mazar-e-Sharif yesterday as U.S. airstrikes pounded nearby Taliban positions, Taliban Defense Minister Obaidullah Akhund confirmed today.
"Yes, Mazar has gone," he told Reuters.
"The city and its airport are with the opposition. Our forces are in Tangi Tashgurghan," he said, referring to a town 40 miles east of Mazar-e-Sharif.

One of your very best JH2. This one will win Essay of the year easily.
God Bless JohnHuang2 for all he does to make FreeRepublic the best source for news and analysis.
He is the real, NO SPIN ZONE!

John- I loved your commentary. It's a 10+. You have nailed our press corp to the cross of foolish agenda driven by even more foolish reporters and journalists parading as so called experts in military prowess. The disservice they perform for our nation is not only insulting, but dangerous. I think it used to be called 'propaganda'.
PPaul-that picture is the stuff of Pulitzer.
billie-thanks for the ping!

Bob Schiffer, CBSNEWS' chief Washington correspondent and host of Face The Nation, speculated openly on the Larry King show following the President's address, that the war, by his lights, "was not going well"; that the U.S. badly miscalculated how long it would take to defeat the Taliban.I don't watch TV but I've heard this idiot many times on CBS-affiliate WTOP radio out of DC. He has few facts, apparently relying on in-house rumors and second-hand information. He has a knack for completely misreading a situation. And yet the boneheads at WTOP revere him as an unequalled political analyst. What a desert it must be there if a twig like him is considered a giant.

Thanks for the heads up. Thought I saw a link to John's 2 cents somewhere last night.

Memo to the 'armchair' "generals" and second-guessers: With the crushing defeat of the Taliban at Mazar-i-Sharif, your credibility is now in a death spiral. God bless our President, God bless our troops, and God bless the United States of America!
My two cents..
"JohnHuang2"
Thanks for the ping.....as always JH2's two cents is priceless!
To: Buckeroo
Got it. Heh, heh. Got change for that 2 cents?

JohnHuang2 ... You exceed expectations in your vivid description of the stark truth. Bookmarked for future referal. The lamestream media is crumbling along with the Tal-i-go-bams. It is a pleasure to watch them both fall.
Gravitas, who needs it when you have character. It is a pleasure to watch W as he brings in one world leader after another and they follow in his obvious leadership.
No wonder X42 looks and acts sick. America finally has a PRESIDENT again, that all the world can respect.

Shrine of Hazrat Ali, Balkh, Afghanistan, photographed in 1974. The shrine was built in Sanjar in 1136, destroyed by Genghis Khan, and rebuilt in 1481 by Husain Baigara.

Behold the different accounts; one (Post #11) says the tomb was buried and hidden by dirt to hide it from Genghis Khan and all but forgotten about, the other (this one) says it was destroyed by Genghis Khan and later rebuilt. Maybe the truth is somewhere in between.
Here's a photo of the inside of the tomb:
