Sorry this turned out to be so long. I hope that it helps people start to get prepared for whatever life may bring us.

Our 72 hour kits have sat in the closet for too long and most of the food has gone stale, etc. Because of Katrina we're pulling them out and redoing them. We had been storing about 200 gallons of water in barrels, but we hadn't been changing the water and it is green, etc. Not potable without boiling or purification of some kind. 2 months ago we purchased a 1,100 gallon tank that is now in line with our water system and constantly refilled. We've also got a pressure pump. We turned off our water supply and without rationing of any kind our watter supply lasted our family for 5 days. With rationing, it would last much longer.

We've been using our food supply (wheat, rice, etc) so we need to restock some of that. We've still got a LOT of food storage sealed in buckets. This disaster is causing me to relook what we have and what we might need to get back up to speed.

I need to relook my communications situation. I rely upon internet, phone, and cell phone and don't have any radios. We've only got one power company in the county and if it went down for an extended period of time, I would be cut off without comms.

I also need to review my bug out plan and what we would take and how we would take it.

This disaster is certainly a wake up call for people to review their preparations in case of any kind of disaster, attack, or whatever.

Another note eat all your frozen and refrigerated food 1st before it spoils and before you break out the canned goods.

The bleach is important. Pure, plain water has a tendency to go bad somehow. A drop of bleach cures the disease in most cases.

I was just wondering how many hot water heaters in NO had untapped sources of fresh water, especially in those apartment buildings.

Surely the water heaters were not all in the basements.

Being prepared is admirable but keeping the amounts of food listed here would be a problem in our climate on the Gulf coast. There would be weevils, roaches and ants in everything other than the canned food.

Good Girl. Good work, again. This is not a drill.

Water [8.33#/Gallon]: catchment system can be Rubbermaid drums (32/44/55 Gal.) with lids on 5-wheel screw-on dollies placed at roof gutters/valleys or open during rain/snow with lid off, Kids) for several clarification/treatment steps to renew "stored" supplies. Bleach or HCl can chemically "treat" water. Research, a f(contamination). Pressure cookers sterilize at first boil. 'Aquarium activated charcoal' (in pet stores) between coffee filters removes flavors, adds black for next filter. Practice. Get only high quality containers, coolers, ice chests and lots of them.

I store foods in 50 qt. Igloo ice chests because fluctuations in temp harms food. 60# dried beans with 2# beef jerky or 60# rice/chest. Chest throw into truck easily.

Peppermints calm nerves for all.

Dog/cat food makes for friends and bait. Use rat shot on rats, round nose on fish.

After N.O., no thinking person should wait another day before he/she organizes and stocks one's pantry, a Never Return bugout bag with weapons et al., a wing and a prayer.

Folks, see Y2K threads for excellent background.

"Coffee Filters

Place three or four filters (one inside the other) into a mason jar and let the edges stick out over the mouth of the jar."

Humor. Why would a Mormon household have coffee filters? (I guess for emergencies).

My Dad was raised as a Mormon, but left at marriage time. He did explain many practical, wise church advices, for good and safe living, such as having one year of food in storage.

We didn't have same (were no longer Mormon). But my Mormon relatives did, and do still.

One is the hot water heater. Turn it off and open the drain at the bottom of the heater

Another option is to salvage an old (usable) water heater.

Flush it well and verify no leaks.
Install this on the water line before the existing (working) water heater. Do not hook up the elements.
Place a shutoff valve between the salvaged heater and the water main.
Install a metal tire air valve into the line between the shutoff valve and the salvage heater.

In an emergency where water service is not available, shut off the water supply at the shutoff valve.

Using a compressor, attached to the air valve, pressurize the system to force water through the pipes.

What this accomplishes is 50 gallons extra of running water in an emergency situation.

Family should be discipline that just because the water is running, does not mean an endless supply.

Post Y2K we were given a huge supply of Provident Pantry dehydrated foods. We have been incorporating them into our meals ocassionally, but I'm trying to make them last for an emergency.

We have not seen any significant spoilage, but have seen some cans bulged. I am assuming botulism and I have discarded the cans.

Are you familiar with Provident pantry and what are your thoughts or knowledge on its shelf life?

We are not rolling in money, so I'm not prepared to pitch everything and restock.

Listen, the little store down the street from me here in Oklahoma had 90% lean ground beef on sale for $1.89 a pound. I bought 30 pounds of it and it's in my deep freeze. If a calamity strikes and my power goes out...everyone can come over for burgers, ok?

:-D

(Thanks for the info!)

I've not read the rest of the posts, just saw it.

I have to say that's one of the main things I admire and respect about LDS. Careful preparation. I've tried to prepare and have just few days in case of emergency.

I think I have some real idealogical arguments but you have one thing right. And I have to say, the women that I've had the pleasure to meet from your religion have been inspirational and respectable. You have the one religion I've noted where women are the rule and center of family life and the one's I've know have ruled the roost to the good of the family.

Ok, I've only met two but I was pretty impressed.
