Sorry this turned out to be so long. I hope that it helps people start to get prepared for whatever life may bring us.

You were reading my mind.....Thanks for the info...I've been thinking about what might be useful to have on hand and remembering the bomb shelter preparations of the 50's...

My wife and I were just driving around in the country talkin along these lines. Dont forget a plan, taught to your eldest kids in case you need to leave in a hurry, so they wont freak, and will know to be calm and help mom and dad in the transition.

What about firearms and ammunition?

Hose Siphoning Take a six or eight foot section of garden hose and stuff two cottontails in one end.
Cottontails? LOL! The ones running around our yard would be hard to catch and stuff into a hose.
Seriously, great information here. Thanks.

I'd like to point out that water can also be purified by distillation (
turning water to steam, then condensing the vapor). This process removes virtually all contaminants including radioactive debris. Most distillers require tubing, preferably copper, a pane of glass, or a sheet of plastic.
A quick web search will turn up dozens of designs.

Provident Living Goal---Make a goal to eat healthier. For example: less sweets... Storage Goal: 50 pounds sugar or honey per person
This is all great information! July's suggestions gave me a chuckle, though.

Thank you for your tips..When I did the Y2K thing I filled and froze pop bottles (soda for the uninformed:>)If you lose your power those pop bottles will turn your freeze into a cooler for food storage for a few days..

As far as money supplies go, it won't do any good if the dollar is worthless. Bible prophesy speaks of a time when they will throw money in the streets because it is worthless. I would suggest any money be in silver or gold currencies, which will be of some value while the paper will be worthless possibly. Of course it could be used as TP if you haven't stocked enough:)

Thank you for bringing back all the Y2K prep ideas that many of our FReepers exchanged in 1998 and 1999!
I got my year's supply of Perma-Pak from Utah, and have it in a cool dry place! I don't regret investing the $$, and have a good feeling knowing it's there!
Love those Mormons!!

I've got most of mine ready - just need to refresh the 72 hour kits, take inventory of the supply and fill in a few deficiencies here and there.
And if anyone wishes to see the wonderful Memorial Service that was held Friday, 14 September in the Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah - click HERE.

Many thanks for this, I am going to print this out and get started. Since I live in California, we are always supposed to have emergency supplies, but I am afraid I don't. I will now and you have given us a great guide line.
To: Utah Girl
Good post. I'm printing it out now. Thanks.

One of Bubba's earlier EOs gave emergency management authorities power to summarily confiscate foodstuffs and supplies for redistribution. I would suspect the LDS people are high profile for those kinds of visits.
