Stakeholders concerned more people at risk of food insecurity after One Big Beautiful Act took effect
Enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap) has decreased significantly over the past year in the US following restrictions imposed by the Trump administration, which has forced more people to seek help from food banks or go hungry, stakeholders say.
The number of people who receive food stamps has dropped from 41.6 million in July 2025, before the One Big Beautiful Act took effect, to 36.5 million in June 2026, a 13% decrease, according to the latest data from the US Department of Agriculture, which administers the program.
While Donald Trump and other Republicans have said the changes incentivize people to find jobs, elected officials, non-profit leaders and people with food insecurity say the changes simply make it harder for Americans to feed their families.
“There is always going to be a percentage of our communities who we need to help – we have to accept that – and so, once we accept it, it is easy to just move forward and do the right thing, which is to provide resources to people who need them,” said Rhona Kamar, founder and executive director of Feed Louisville, a non-profit that aims to reduce hunger and food waste.
The Trump administration’s changes to Snap will reduce spending by about $187bn over 10 years, the congressional budget office projected.
Previously, only able-bodied people between ages 18 and 54 who did not have dependents under 18 had to meet a requirement that they work a minimum of 20 hours per week or only get benefits for a maximum of three months over three years.

I was wondering, who the heck are these “stakeholders”? Do they mean “other people on food stamps?”
I voted for this!
Communism is stealing.
To steal from us, they must first lie to us.
Anybody who is sad about this needs to go to Walmart and look at the shoppers and what they are loading into their grocery carts.
Yeah. Trump sucks! According to us he is doing it wrong.
💋😂🤣🤣😜
Next step: Eliminate SNAP and EBT completely.
Getting rid of illegal aliens and deadbeats. That is good news.
13% is very nice.
This temporary change will be corrected with the next congress or the next president. The food stamps/SNAP will be loaded back up again in the near future.
The only fix is to abolish departments - the one thing we haven’t seen anything of.
I remember when they said Illegals didn’t receive food stamps.
If The Guardian is whining, you know it’s the right thing to do.
Uh, saved our money/tax dollars by removing scamming scammers off food stamp programs. Pretty sure thats what the gwardiuhn meant to say. Hey assclowns at the lying guardian.... 🖕. That is all.
Half the country is morbidly obese I doubt anyone is going hungry
Look at the crap the schools are feeding our kids.
“he number of people who receive food stamps has dropped from 41.6 million in July 2025, before the One Big Beautiful Act took effect, to 36.5 million in June 2026, a 13% decrease”
Surely we can do better than this. We should aspire to at least a 25% decrease and then improve on that year by year.
Good!
And they go to food banks. They don’t miss a trick to get freebies, and they network.
Exactly! The federal government was never granted the constitutional authority to steal money from taxpayers to give to some selected group.
Americans?
When I was a kid very few kids even got the school lunch. Most of us would brown bag it
