DUPONT, Wash — A 35-year-old woman was booked into the Pierce County Jail after Washington State Patrol said she stabbed two children following a rollover crash on Interstate 5 near DuPont.
The crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. Monday on southbound I-5 near Center Drive, Exit 118.
WSP identified the driver as a 35-year-old woman from Steilacoom, and the children as ages 9 and 15.
WSP said the woman was driving erratically before the crash.
According to a state patrol memo, her Volkswagen Tiguan struck a barrier, moved across the freeway and hit a semi-truck before striking another barrier and rolling.
Several people stopped to help, including two men in military uniforms from Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Nathan Wilkinson said he was driving to work when he came across the scene and saw the two servicemembers intervene.
"There's people standing around, then all of a sudden there was a flash, and then the two soldiers jumped on a person... I heard a scream at that time," said Wilkinson. "I saw one of the soldiers had a knife in his hand that he had dislodged from the person they tackled."
The bystanders subdued the woman, and Wilkinson called 911.
WSP said the younger child suffered broken bones and stab wounds. Additional information about the older child's condition was not immediately available.
The woman was initially taken to a hospital and was later booked into the Pierce County Jail, where she is expected to be charged Tuesday with two counts of assault, vehicular assault, and two counts of reckless endangerment.
The names of the JBLM servicemembers were not immediately known. Wilkinson said he hopes they are recognized for helping at the scene.
"They didn't run away, they didn't pass, drive on by. They stopped and helped," he said.
Probably postpartum depression. The soldiers will be given remedial training so they can recognize it and be more sensitive to it next time.
Sorry. Trying to think like a defense lawyer for a minute there.
Apparently she was trying to kill them?
Umm, no one says they were her kids. My bet? She was trafficking and the kids tried to escape — which explains her trying to murder them.
She does have mental issues. She owns a Tiguan.
“I just shot my buddy, I think I killed him, send help!”
“Okay sir, are you sure he's dead?”
“Um, I think so, let me check.”
BANG!
“Okay, yeah he's dead. Now what?”
All kidding aside, what a nightmare for those children and thank God for those others stopping and stepping in to harm's way to stop the deranged woman.
Sounds like two counts of Attempted Murder to me.
From Steilacoom driving a Tiguan. I’m guessing this is another mentally ill, white, “happy -pilled”, liberal f*cktard housewife
I mean they mention the Tiguan in the story….so it must be relevant.
Seems like shootings and killings on the highways are rivaling accidents for fatality numbers here in whacko let em loose WA.
So she tried to kill her children in a violent rollover crash.
That didn’t work so she went to stabbing then?
One of the best cars I ever owned was a Tiguan.
Of course I traded it in before 100,000 miles.
Her last words prior to the rollover were “Don’t make me turn this car around!”
This is a terrible article. Were the kids her kids? Someone else’s? Were other cars involved in the crash aside from the semi? Who wrote this junk?
PTSD from the crash and now will sue those that helped her.
Thanks for explaining the wife. Heh
If we were more compassionate, we might realize that with a carefully planned preventative stabbing before the crash, the crash might have been avoided completely.
I'm proud they reacted while the others apparently broke out the cell phones for some tik tok time.
“From Steilacoom”
IIRC, there used to be — maybe still is — a dreadful mental institution there. I remember it from reading the biography of actress Frances Farmer, whose mother forced her to be institutionalized there. Chilling.
Maybe this woman was an escapee.
