Trump’s Frustration With His Own Supreme Court Appointees Boils Over

Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the president’s comments, which came after the justices blocked his bid to impose new restrictions on mail ballots

WASHINGTON—President Trump’s hot-and-cold views on his own Supreme Court appointees took a new turn Tuesday when he said the three justices he installed were unrecognizable to him, a statement that Attorney General Todd Blanche later defended.

The president said in a Truth Social post that “these are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves,” a reference to Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, all of whom Trump appointed during his first term.

The social-media post came after the high court blocked his administration from imposing new requirements for mail ballots. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented.

During a news briefing Tuesday, Blanche said that the president is “very frustrated” and “should communicate his concerns with the Supreme Court whenever he has them.”

“The real question is whether the president of the United States is allowed to be critical of another branch of government and the answer to that is, absolutely, of course he is,” Blanche said.

The comments, which came during a rare White House Rose Garden appearance by an attorney general, underscore how closely Blanche has aligned himself with the president. Blanche, Trump’s former criminal defense lawyer, also has said Trump has the right and responsibility to involve himself in the Justice Department’s historically independent criminal investigations.

Blanche indicated that the administration would comply with the Supreme Court’s decision but added “that doesn’t mean that we’re not going to do everything in this administration that we can to make sure that there are free and fair elections.”

Far from conservative. If being conservative means letting illegals vote I’m against that.

“Justice Department’s historically independent criminal investigations.”

A laughable assertion.

they are merely a shell of their original selves

Or, they just presented as conservatives. Like, Oklahoma's senator who was a hard 'D' in a Republican state, so he ran as an 'R.'

The Purcell principle — that federal courts should not change election rules close to an election because it creates confusion and risk of disenfranchisement - is a longstanding conservative principle. I know MAGA doesn’t believe in principles, but conservatives do, and it doesn’t matter which party is in power.

This is what happens when you allow the GOPe to choose your nominees. The Trump 3 have been disappointing to say the least.

Supreme Court Justices owe their allegiance to the Constitution, not the President who appointed them. No Justice should ever be the “vote” of a particular President.

That said, it’s not like President Trump is attempting to do wildly un-Constitutional things. Yet, not only do they not support acts arguably purely within the purview of the President, this Court, Roberts in particular, allows lower Courts to continually run roughshod over the Executive branch’s authority.

This later poses a much greater threat to our Republic than any USPS mailing rules.

There are actually only two conservatives on the court.

Wow, what a giant whiner baby boy this president is. I think if I had any adult in my life who was so petty and childish they wouldn’t be in my life for very long.

“Waaaa! Those meanie supreme Court judges voted against me and now I’m mad!”

Keep throwing your toys out of the crib, Donnie. I’m sure your supporters really love how mature it makes you look.

Does conservative mean not correcting a secure and relatively valid voting system that has been gutted?

As for the justices, they are who he nominated. I never saw ACB as very conservative for one.
