How burritos are tearing apart the Republican Party
The Telegraph ^ | 8/6/2026 | Natasha Lake

The Iran War, the Epstein files and even the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool have prompted fierce debate on Capitol Hill since Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

But there was one topic that even Washington’s political class probably didn’t expect to cause a storm among Republicans this week: the humble burrito.

It began on Tuesday with a post on X from Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA.

Recounting a recent conversation with one of the conservative group’s student supporters, he wrote: “One of our TPUSA college students gave me his take on affordability. A burrito shouldn’t cost $20.”

He added: “Yeah, a lot of this is a hangover from Covid and Biden-era inflation, but the lived experience is the same: it just feels like basic things cost too much.”

“So people are actually going to have a giant conversation about “affordability”
and completely ignore the fact that over the last 20 years we ran the biggest money printing experiment in human history?

Yes, young people should work hard. Also, a burrito shouldn’t cost $20.”

The Redheaded Libertarian

“Burritos are not the new avocado toast. A burrito is not a manufactured delicacy. It’s poor people food, and if poor people food costs $20 on the go, that’s a supply chain issue or an inflation problem. Both of which we have thanks to a $2 trillion deficit & another foreign war.”

Burritos are a human right. We need universal burrito-care.

Had lunch at a decent sit down restaurant (it wasn’t a fast food joint anyways), burger and a beer (plus fries) it was about 22 bucks
20 dollar burrito seems a tad excessive

People don’t seem to understand. It’s not that stuff costs more. It’s that your dollar buys less. There’s a huge difference. Something costing more would mean there was less of it to buy. Your dollar buying less means there are too many dollars chasing the same goods. THAT is a problem of government printing extra dollars which costs the government NOTHING. When the interest rate was held at essentially zero for so long and printing money cost nothing, you can’t deny some other politician his bridge to nowhere because he’ll deny your bridge to nowhere.

When the government prints money and spends it, what it buys goes further than it will for you when that dollar finally gets into your wallet. As the last honest Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynahan said, “Politics is all about who gets how much and when.”

I don’t see this ever going away until the dollar collapses. Because we live in a world of fake money value and other countries’ money is faker than the dollar, it’ll take a while. Meantime, expect $20, $30 and $40 burritos.

Sounds like delivery fees added. I can get huge burritos for half that. Enough to satisfy 2 people

No. The trumpbots keep gettting it wrong.

Trump’s Iran war is the cause. It has caused goods and services to increase in cost. Products have shrunk in size. Fuel costs have also increased.

The Left never acknowledges the consequences of the money printing. How long can we keep these plates spinning on those poles? I’m always amazed. Just when i think it’s got to stop, they speed up!

Trump inherited inflation and no one blamed him for that.

Now his policies (specifically the war on Iran) is the reason we are having continued inflation.
