HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) — Advocates warn that tens of thousands of migrant children who came to the United States alone could lose legal representation in immigration court and increase their risk of deportation as the Trump administration allows a contract with legal services providers to expire.
Friday marks the last day of a contract under which the federal government pays for legal services for children who enter the U.S. without a parent or guardian. The government contracts out those services to a network of nearly 100 legal groups across the country that provide services to roughly 20,000 children.
The Trump administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment on why it was allowing the contract to expire. But it comes as the administration has redoubled its efforts to achieve its policy of mass deportations, and after migrant children became a target for removal from the country during the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term in office.
As part of the expiring contract, the legal groups can enter government-funded shelters and give presentations to children about their legal rights, and directly represent the children as they go through immigration court proceedings.
But as that contract ends, the providers say it’s unclear what will happen come Monday or whether they’ll be able to visit their clients in the shelters where they live.

Perhaps they can be sent to their country of heritage to be reunited with relatives. That is as it should be, AP Snooze.
Why are any kids here without a parent or guardian not being deported back to their relatives the minute their little feet touch the ground in the US?
The only services for children who enter the U.S. without a parent or guardian that should be paid for are the services that that give them some dinner, get the address of their parents/relatives in their home country, call those parents/relatives to let them know what airport to pick the kid up at the next day-then put the kid up in a safe place for the night. Next day, give the kid breakfast and load them onto a flight headed to their home country, no lawyer required. Doesn’t sound costly-quick, efficient 24-48 hr turnaround, and the kid stays safe from the traffickers in the US pretending to be relatives...
That should be our nation's attitude in general.
It makes no sense to invite a homeless person who is begging on the street to come and live in your house for the rest of their life.
