US troops targeted through commercial location data
Iran International ^ | 5-28-26

US forces in war zones have been targeted through commercially available location data, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing a letter from US Central Command shared by US Senator Ron Wyden.

CENTCOM said it had received “multiple threat reports concerning adversary exploitation of commercial location data to target or surveil US personnel in theater,” according to the letter.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers warned the Pentagon that commercial location data could reveal where US troops gather and their daily patterns, exposing them to missile, drone and roadside bomb attacks.

Wyden said Washington should start treating the adtech industry as a national security threat.

It was about to happen eventually. Ad tech is bigger brother raiding your wallet. Of course they have to gather all that information to sell products...right.

Why would Wyden share this? Is he trying to give our adversaries ideas?

They probably don’t need any help.

It is informing the targets on what our adversaries are doing.

I saw another report about this right when the fighting began. It’s a real issue. Soldiers should be taught to not carry personal phones outside of base areas. With all the tech we have now, they should be given “dumb” phones or smartphones that otherwise blend in with the local phone traffic - local numbers, phones that are common to the area, and don’t ping back to US assets (like FB, or X).

AdTech is the easier platform to exploit, sure, but an adversary who has access to tower data or tower traffic can make similar conclusions about who is in the area.

“””””Soldiers should not be carrying phones”””””

Soldiers are so carefully trained about everything, taping down or removing pieces of metal for sound, using a flashlight, camouflage, how to use plants, reflective surfaces, these high tech watches and phones are going to have to be a part of this life and death training.

In the war in Europe important attacks and deadly losses have been triggered by these ordinary civilian devices that everyone from the lowest private to officers bring with them as civilian toys and conveniences.

Yeah, I think I remember when the Ukraine war first started, the Ukes were tracking and revealing Russian soldiers phone calls and messages for psyops attacks and even using location data to send HIMARS missiles.

Carrying them on the base can be an issue too.
