Senate advances resolution to limit Trump's Iran war powers for first time, after 4 Republicans defect

The Senate advanced a resolution to limit President Trump's war powers in Iran on Tuesday, marking a breakthrough for Democrats after seven failed attempts.

Senators approved a motion to discharge the resolution from committee in a 50 to 47 vote. Four Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana — joined the bulk of Democrats in favor of advancing the resolution. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the sole Democrat to oppose.

The vote marked the first time Cassidy supported advancing a war powers resolution. It came days after he failed to win enough support to advance to a runoff in the Louisiana GOP Senate primary, where Mr. Trump endorsed one of his opponents.

And three Republicans — Sens. John Cornyn of Texas, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama and Thom Tillis of North Carolina — did not vote, tipping the scales in Democrats' favor for the first time since they began bringing war powers resolutions related to Iran.

The resolution, led by Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, would direct the president to "remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force."

The vote marked only a first step in the Senate. And even if both chambers approved the resolution, the president would be expected to veto it. But Democrats say the move would carry significance, and have the potential to change the president's thinking in the war.

Kaine told reporters ahead of the vote that he couldn't predict whether it would attract additional GOP support, noting that he "didn't know that we would get an additional vote last week" when Murkowski became the third Republican to support advancing the resolution.

He won’t need to veto it. It won’t pass in the House.

All of them. We wouldn’t be dealing with this now if Trump had done what the Constitution requires and obtained Congressional approval for the use of force (the legal equivalent of a declaration of war).

That’s putting the country above politics.

If Collins can keep her seat, she will be a reliable vote.
Once Cornyn, Tillis and Cassidy are gone, Rand and the Kow can hide in their bunker waiting for their time to come.

We also wouldn’t be dealing with this now if Trump had stuck to his guns and finished the job once he went to war (without any consultation with Congress, let alone a vote). The Republicans lined up with near unanimity to support him because rallying to the flag once the balloon goes up is what Republicans still tend to do. A lot of the congressional Republicans had misgivings but they put that aside and closed ranks.

Then with the Iranians on their backs, Trump started flipflopping every 72 hours. Of course some people are ready to walk.

I’ve long since lost track of the number of times Trump has slammed Republicans who didn’t get the memo quickly enough and were out in town meetings and giving interviews still trying to defend what Trump was saying yesterday.

Where does the Constitution require that?

Artile I, Section 8, Clause 11.

Congress has the sole power to declare war.

Nor try reading Art II. Last I check Trump never declared war, he used the military per his constitutional war powers as granted in Art II.

Art I does not mean only congress can authorize use of the military, there is a lot of grey between military actions and a declaration of war between countries

“Congress has the sole power to declare war.”

Trump didn’t declare war. He followed the rules congress set down per the constitution.

Of course some people are ready to walk.

Margaret Thatcher: "This is no time to go wobbly".

Which for GOP in House and Senate is any time.
