‘Point of no return’: New Orleans relocation must start now due to sea level, study finds

The process of relocating people from New Orleans should start immediately, as the city has reached a “point of no return” that will see it surrounded by the ocean within decades due to the climate crisis, a stark new study has concluded.

Ongoing sea-level rise and the erosion of wetlands in southern Louisiana will swallow up the New Orleans area within a few generations, with the new paper estimating the city “may well be surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico before the end of this century”.

Low-lying southern Louisiana faces multiple threats, with rising sea levels driven by global heating, compounded by strengthening hurricanes, also a feature of the climate crisis, and the gradual subsidence of a coastline that has been carved apart by the oil and gas industry.

Southern Louisiana is facing 3-7 metres of sea-level rise and the loss of three-quarters of its remaining coastal wetlands, which will cause the shoreline “to migrate as much as 100km (62 miles) inland”, thereby stranding New Orleans and Baton Rouge, according to the study, which compared today’s rising global temperatures with a period of similar heat 125,000 years ago that caused a rise in sea level.

This scenario makes the region the “most physically vulnerable coastal zone in the world”, the researchers state, and requires immediate action to prepare a smooth transition for people away from New Orleans, which has a population of about 360,000 people, to safer ground.

Louisiana has already experienced population loss in recent years, and this trend will accelerate in a disordered way, the paper warns, should no action be taken to confront the perils faced by its largest city and surrounding communities.

“While climate mitigation should remain the first step to prevent the worst outcomes, coastal Louisiana has evidently already crossed the point of no return,”

Left-wing Google AI says that the time range for a 3m rise in ocean level will take “between several hundred and two thousand years.”

An alarmist article from a typical source. They even implicate the local fossil fuel industry for good measure. Save this article for reference 10 years from now. That said, if you’ve visited New Orleans lately you might conclude the place is ripe for a healthy reset.

Another typical warning from "experts".

Turn a blank sheet of paper sideways. On the left write “weather event” in small letters, draw a circle around the words, and then draw a small arrow pointing to the right side. On the far right, write the words "manmade climate change” in small letters, draw a circle around the words, and then draw a small arrow pointing to the circle.

Is there not a large blank space in the middle? Have you ever seen a story which fills in this area? Have you ever read a story that uses words like sun and ocean, which are the two enormous engines determining temperature? Cannot the stories that you have seen be inserted into one or the other circles? Consider the research of Michael Mann, et al enshrining to this day his speculation the results were “highly suggestive of man-made global warming”, which lead to endless breathtaking fantasies freed from the rigors of scientific standards.

I will submit there is no evidence of man-made global warming because no adherent to the popular mythology will acknowledge the existence of the sun and oceans, nor will they employ mathematical and scientific concepts like open system, closed system, correlation, and causation. All I have ever seen are fraudulent to accurate comments on weather events or physical phenomenon involving temperature followed by an assertion man-made global warming as the cause. I have yet to find any article which attempts to measure the influence of the sun and ocean and then ascribe an increment to human activity.

In the hard sciences of Math and Physics, the earth’s climate is known as an open system, meaning all influencers are probabilistic and not deterministic. Any assertions must be less than certain, and any models developed from such assertions must suffer a continuing decrease in probability the further they are extended into the future. Because of the presence of chaos, also known as the butterfly effect, even the application of probability can lead to reasonable information for an open system as complex as climate only when applied to more general theses using much more data acquired over much longer periods of time than would seem necessary or anyone would desire.

However, we are always treated with infallibility statements like those for the boiling point of water, which happens in a closed system. Popular reasoning requires a complete disconnect between events and conclusions and is no more rigorous than Middle Age alchemy.

Katrina was a blessing in disguise. Cut the population in half. Recycle all the soon to be drowned houses into recycled houses using prison labor.

There are vast areas in Louisiana where man was not meant to live. New Orleans is such a place.
When I went to LSU in BTR, I was advised not to rent a ground-floor apartment. That turned out to be prophetic.

I thought everyone moved to Hooston after Katrina.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Nagin

Nagin was convicted on 20 of the 21 counts by jury on February 12, 2014. These charges included that he had taken more than $500,000 in payouts from businessmen in exchange for millions of dollars’ worth of city contracts.[63][64]

Incarceration and release

Judge Helen Ginger Berrigan ordered a pre-sentencing investigation. On July 9, 2014, Nagin was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment and more than $585,000 in restitution and forfeiture.[7] Berrigan recommended that Nagin be sent to the Federal Correctional Complex, Oakdale.[65] On July 15, 2014, Nagin’s attorney filed an appeal with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.[66] Nagin lost another appeal of his case in July 2019.[67]

On September 3, 2014, a judge deemed Nagin indigent and ordered the Federal Public Defender’s Office to take over his appeal. Nagin said he was near penniless and relying on food stamps.[68] Nagin reported to the Federal Correctional Institution, Texarkana, a prison camp, on September 8, 2014.[69] Nagin was assigned as prisoner Bureau of Prisons (BOP) #32751-034. The terms of the sentencing include a possible release date of no earlier than May 25, 2023.[70] However, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic spreading in the prison, authorities released Nagin to house arrest on April 27, 2020.[71]

Following his release to house arrest, Nagin remained under ‘community confinement’ for two years that ended in March 2022. He then served a two-year term of supervised probation, which concluded on March 16, 2024. Upon completing the terms of his supervised release, Nagin marked the occasion on social media with a quotation from Martin Luther King Jr.: “Free at last, free at last, Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.”[72]

The issue isn’t rising seal levels as there is virtually no proof that is actually happening. The issue is that Southern Louisiana was formed by sediment flowing down the Mississippi River. When the Government built levees along the river to prevent flooding all the sediment which replenished coastal erosion was eliminated and over time coastal erosion has taken away the protective marshes. There isn’t an easy fix but one idea is to build dikes or sea walls like The Netherlands. The cost might be an issue but if nothing is done Southern Louisiana will be overtaken by the Gulf.

The area Native Americans told the French, you better move to high ground. This place is only good for flooding and mosquitoes. The farce runs deep with those people.
