Allegations that civil rights icon Cesar Chavez raped and sexually abused underage girls landed like a bombshell Wednesday in New Mexico, where he has enjoyed reverential status for decades.
Adding to the heartbreak was a statement released Wednesday by New Mexico native Dolores Huerta revealing that she too experienced coerced and forced sexual encounters with Chavez that resulted in pregnancies in the 1960s.
Huerta, 95, who was born in Colfax County and went on to co-found the National Farm Workers Association with Chavez, revealed that her two children with Chavez were "raised by other families that could give them stable lives," according to her statement.
"As a young mother in the 1960s, I experienced two separate sexual encounters with Cesar (Chavez)," Huerta wrote in the statement posted on Medium, an online publishing platform.
"The first time I was manipulated and pressured into having sex with him, and I didn’t feel I could say no because he was someone that I admired, my boss and the leader of the movement I had already devoted years of my life to," she wrote. "The second time I was forced, against my will, and in an environment where I felt trapped."
Huerta, who helped run the run the farmworkers union with Chavez, said she was prompted to come forward by an investigation by The New York Times that identified allegations of sexual abuse by Chavez against two girls.
Huerta said she kept the secret for 60 years "because building the movement and securing farmworker rights was my life's work" and she feared the revelations would damage the movement.
The allegations create a dilemma for officials in New Mexico where dozens of streets, murals, schools, community centers and memorials are dedicated to the revered Latino civil rights leader.

As for Huerta, who kept the secret for 60 years, she said she did so to continue to build the movement as securing farmworkers rights was her life's work.
For how long has this been known?
My question: why now? And why has Chavez become a disposable hero of the Left? Will they now use him as an example to go after George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or some other icon?
“Huerta said she kept the secret for 60 years “because building the movement and securing farmworker rights was my life’s work” and she feared the revelations would damage the movement.”
The end justifies the means?

Where were these accusers when streets were being named after him?
Decades, it’s been known, or at least whispered about for decades.
It still seems weird to me. Leftists are famous for apologizing for and papering over the misdeeds of their miscreants. But now, 60 years later, an acolyte of the migrant farm workers’ movement drops the facade? At the bottom of it, it seems self-serving to me. I get the impression she thinks some sort of status or recognition is owed to her for bringing it up now. If she’s worried about damage, a lot of cities are looking at renaming some streets and diminishing the stature of her movement’s hero.
Downright Orwellian if that’s how it turns out! One name erased for another to be penciled in!
When do they change the MLK streets?
…And he can’t defend himself now, whatever the truth. Have DNA tests been done?
She claims he “pressured” her the first time and assaulted her the second. Not buying the story for either incident.
From the other ABQ Journal article (#14):
On Thursday, during a news conference on the opening of a new animal habitat at the ABQ BioPark, [Mayor] Keller announced City Councilor Joaquín Baca “has expressed his intent to change the name” of Avenida Cesar Chavez.
Keller said he will work with Baca but it will “take a little bit of time and council action to change that name.”
“I remember changing it to Dolores Huerta, one half of it, and I remember you have to notify every landowner and actually get some consent because, again, there are address changes (to make),” the mayor said.
