A generation ago, Poland rationed sugar and flour while its citizens were paid one-tenth what West Germans earned. Today its economy has edged past Switzerland to become the world’s 20th largest with over $1 trillion in annual output.
It's a historic leap from the post-communist ruins of 1989-90 to today’s European growth champion that economists say has lessons on how to bring prosperity to ordinary people — and that the Trump administration says should be recognized by Poland’s presence at a summit of the Group of 20 leading economies later this year
In 35 years — a little less than one person’s working lifetime — Poland’s per capita gross domestic product rose to $55,340 in 2025, or 85% of the EU average. That’s up from $6,730 in 1990, or 38% of the EU average and now roughly equal to Japan’s $52,039, according to International Monetary Fund figures measured in today’s dollars and adjusted for Poland’s lower cost of living.
Poland’s economy has grown an average 3.8% a year since joining the EU in 2004, easily beating the European average of 1.8%.
One of the most important factors was rapidly building a strong institutional framework for business, he said. That included independent courts, an anti-monopoly agency to ensure fair competition, and strong regulation to keep troubled banks from choking off credit.
As a result, the economy wasn’t hijacked by corrupt practices and oligarchs, as happened elsewhere in the post-communist world.

Not EU funds but access to the giant EU market and common rules.
Like other post communist or post socialist countries, it just boomed.
And idiots want to implement socialism in the USA .
Well for one thing they had nowhere to go but up, right?
wow. congratulations Poland!
Yes, but does that mean that the idiots in the USA clamouring for socialism think that they have nowhere to go but down?
What happened? It’s no mystery. Lech Walesa’s Solidarity brought in Jeffrey Sachs from the U.S., and Sachs prescribed an economic plan of “shock therapy”: full-scale privatization of the economic, abolition of all price controls and avoidance of significant public debt. And Poland went this that. And damned if it didn’t work. Who knew that free-markets combined with fiscal responsibility might actually work?? Go figure.
Many companies began outsourcing IT and programming to Poland for the past 10-15 years or so. It was extremely cheap and the people were excellent, well mannered, and highly technical and competent. Much better than India. Now that Poland has grown so much, the multi national corporations will probably move on to the next low cost Eastern European nation to outsource.

California is the 4th largest economy on the planet. That must mean they’re doing something right.
The less government, the more the results can be achieved through the people.
So, whom would we have to "kick out" to make room for Poland? The previously-ranked 20th strongest economy? Nigeria?
Regards,
Bob is right.
And not only that but California position has actually improved over the past 25 years.
In 2000 California was the 6th largest economy (trailing the US, Japan, Germany, UK, and France).
2002–2010: It fluctuated between 7th and 10th. The “Dot-com” crash of 2000 and the 2008 Great Recession hit California’s tech and real estate sectors particularly hard, causing it to slip behind Brazil and Italy for a few years.
2012–2017: A massive recovery began. By 2012, it was 9th; by 2015, it hit 6th again, overtaking Brazil and France. In 2017, it famously overtook the United Kingdom to become the 5th largest
Essentially, the state is producing “more value per person” than almost any other place on Earth.
Like Poland, it happened by the efforts of hard-working people and entrepreneurs, in spite of oppressive regulation and the welfare state.
I don’t think Poland should be put in the G20 yet - it is economically strong, but it still punches well below its weight in the international arena - well below Spain, Switzerland, Nigeria.
Poland needs to be more “hungry” and step up more — it still has a lot of inferiority complex
Example: Anna Draganska
I am sure that a large contributing factor is that one can count the number of muslimes in Poland on two hands. That and none are being admitted to this day.
Keeping your culture pure is the true way to peace and prosperity.
We have all seen interviews of students and adults on YouTube who were chanting, "We want socialism. Down with capitalism."
When asked what socialism actually is, they just stare blankly with mouths agape.
>>an anti-monopoly agency to ensure fair competition
We could use one of those here in the U.S.
Among the answers:
Essentially no muslims.
California though is on the down swing, while Poland is on the way up.
I’ve heard that Poland has (1) “found” Christianity again, and that it’s becoming stronger every day (don’t know if it’s true). Also, that Poland has become very nationalistic and tough on immigration (again, don’t know if it’s true).
Anyhow, it could be either or both of those issues if they’re truly happening.
