Vance was ‘skeptical’ voice in White House on Iran strikes
POLITICO ^ | March 13, 2026 | Diana Nerozzi and Eli Stokols

Vance, who has long questioned U.S. intervention abroad, has publicly defended Trump’s Iran operation. But White House officials revealed that the vice president made his opposition known in the leadup, pulling the curtain open after months of speculation about Vance being far more tepid about military action than Trump.

Vance is “skeptical,” is “worried about success” and “just opposes” the war on Iran, a senior Trump official said via text message. The official was granted anonymity to speak about the vice president’s views.

A second senior Trump official said “his role is to provide the president and the administration, you know, all points of views of what could happen from many different angles and, you know, he does that. But once the decision has been made, he’s fully on board.”

Trump himself had said that Vance was initially hesitant about striking Iran but was more supportive now,

This is the first account I have seen of "White House officials" detailing the degree to which Vance opposes the war on Iran.

Vance doing what a good second does. Lay out drawbacks, propose alternatives and whatever the decision, back it all the way.

This will serve Vance well if the war goes badly as well as if it goes well.

I remember that I was against the first Persian Gulf war. However, once it started, I participated in a pro war March in Seattle to show support for my troops. That is, now that they are there, let’s get it over with with his few casualties as possible.

DS can derail the entire notion of a quick campaign with a mere 1-2 acts of interference. Then suddenly it’s a quagmire.

I pray that POTUS has a short leash on things...

The media would hate it if everyone around Trump just blindly supported him. A bunch of “Yes” men? That would be a disaster!

But the media perks right up when they learn that someone near Trump disagrees with him. Vance opposed it? Well, we’re heading for a disaster! Time for the 25th Amendment!

Or maybe Vance has his finger on the pulse of Trump’s core supporters far better than most of the people in the government advising the president these days.

No rational person wants a war. I understand Vance’s reluctance, and virtually everyone else reluctance. The reality with Iran is stark and unchangeable.

Since the Ayatollahs took over probably 100K terrorist attacks worldwide have occurred, and virtually all of them are Muslim perpetrators. Iran’s main export isn’t oil, it’s terror and it’s industry.

Doesn’t matter if we like war, Iran has declared war on the US for 47 years. They have participated in targeting Americans, and American servicepeople, that were not engaged in hostilities in their nation at all. The links with Al Queda and Iran are all well established (see USS Cole investigation).

You can’t ignore that Iran needs to change, or be completely isolated from it’s economic production and the transport of oil. I would also accept unconditional surrender.

Pure BS. I am a CFO. When my boss has a plan I always lay out what if devil’s advocate scenarios before he goes with his plan. And he appreciates it.

“Wants” is an irrational term when discussing war.

Going to war is the result of reason, not emotion

The worst American enemies are actually leftist Americans who call them selves progressive. The worst of the worst are the media. A little unexplained media death would be a pleasant two or three day change in the news of the day
