Georgia high school teacher killed during prank gone wrong outside his home, 5 teens arrested

A Georgia high school teacher was fatally run over outside his home in a freak accident when five teens targeted his house in a late-night prank gone wrong.

Jason Hughes, a math teacher at North Hall High School, was investigating commotion outside his Gainesville, Ga., home around 11:40 p.m. Thursday when he allegedly spotted pranksters “rolling” toilet paper across his property, 11 Alive reported, citing the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

The 40-year-old educator stepped outside his home and walked over to the cars that 18-year-old Jayden Wallace and four other teens were getting into to flee the area.

Hughes allegedly tripped and fell into the road as Wallace drove his pickup truck away, running over the homeowner.

The teen driver and two others stopped to check on Hughes, providing first aid until emergency responders arrived and transported him to the hospital.

Hughes died from his injuries at Gainesville’s Northeast Georgia Medical Center on Friday.

Wallace was hit with a slew of charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering on private property.

Very sad, no winners here.

Tragic. The family has already made a statement that they view it as an accident.

I think the DA is overcharging here. It was a tragic accident, there was no intent to physically harm the teacher. They did not run off after the accident, they called for help and they attempted to aid him. Not being a lawyer, but I think “manslaughter” is used when your action results in a death when there is no intent to harm someone. Of course I could be wrong.

The teacher’s family wants the charges dropped.
The DA won’t be able to convince a jury to vote guilty to any serious charges.

Here in Florida we have something like that called “culpable manslaughter”, which I think would be appropriate in this case.

Involuntary manslaughter, and even that would be a bit of a stretch. They would have a hard time proving reckless indifference when the driver immediately stopped and attempted to render first and, all while awaiting EMS.

Me too! We rolled the strictest teacher’s house and almost died when his front door opened as he was known to fire warning shots. We ran so fast and one guy ran straight into a guide wire going to the tv antenna and had a deep mark on his neck for a couple of weeks. We found out after that he wasn’t at home and it was his wife that opened the door. We were good kids for the most part. We went over the day after and cleaned it all up...lol

I'd want to know a few things about these kids before I form an opinion regarding punishment. The main question is...what kind of kids were they.Good kids? Good students? Or were they punks...troublemakers?

If the teacher's family doesn't want them charged it seems that a conviction on serious charges would be hard to obtain.

Maybe a plea agreement....they stay out of trouble for 10 years and any charge constituting a felony would be dropped. If they don't stay out of trouble they spend serious time in prison.

You are right, there are no winners. But the irony to me is that adults think this activity is harmless. At least they did in the 80’s. I wasn’t very popular with my stand that it was against the law and dangerous. Most saw it as mischief and the danger part was only occasional. Children falling out of trees and being seriously injured for life didn’t phase them. A teen in our area was electrocuted (if I remember correctly). But I was still the stick in the mud for thinking there are better things teens could do in their free time. Now these teens have a lifetime to carry the burden of a prank gone wrong resulting in death.

The teacher’s family wants the charges dropped.

Indeed. Why ruin the life of an 18 year old before it even starts? Sad incident. But the family is following the WWJD advice.

AI on Google implies, by my reading of it, that they are seriously overcharging. I don’t know why.

Reckless vehicular homicide?

It was committed in the commission of a crime albeit trespass and vandalism.

Some ask why ruin his life?

Maybe because he took an INNOCENT life.

I don’t see this much differently than hazing deaths committed by fraternities.

When the founders put this country in motion, they didn’t do it to have preppies aspire to be wannabe prom kings and queens as it is my understanding these stupid games had something to do with prom celebration.

With a couple of football players living in it our house used to get TP during our high school years, a large high spirited all-American school, it was a sign of affection and popularity, good kids being good kids, not the hoodlums, doing a hit.

“Oops, sorry. My bad!”

Human life is getting cheaper and cheaper in this overly permissive society. The funeral long over, these “kids” will be happily going on with their lives by high school prom night.

A wife with no husband. Two children with no father.
