NEW YORK (AP) — Humans and Neanderthals cozied up from time to time when they lived in the same areas tens of thousands of years ago. But we don’t know much about who got with whom, or why.
A new genetic analysis offers some ancient gossip: The pairings were more often female humans with male Neanderthals.
How exactly this happened remains a huge question mark. Did human women venture into Neanderthal populations, or were the Neanderthal males drawn to larger human enclaves? Were these interactions peaceful, confusing, secretive or even violent?
“I don’t know if we’ll ever get a definitive answer to how this happened, since we can’t travel back in time,” said population genetics expert Xinjun Zhang with the University of Michigan, commenting on the new analysis.

Apparently, my wife hooked up with a Neanderthal. I have more Neanderthal markers in my DNA than 97-98% of the general population.
I tell her there’s a biological reason I act like a caveman.
Start with people whose surnames begin with "Mc", "Mac" or "Fitz", among others. And that was long after Neanderthals disappeared.

Since humans and Neanderthals were different species who probably couldn’t even communicate, my guess is that most human x Neanderthal hybrids were the outcome of rape rather than normal socializing and courtship. It would have been much easier for a stout Neanderthal male to rape a human female than for a human male to rape a (still strong and muscular) Neanderthal female.

The Neanderthals used to set up local milk delivery routes until the males homo sapiens caught on.
Fred and Barney had the squat, with Neanderthal look while Wilma and Betty were lithe Cro-Magnons.
Human females, so easy a caveman could do it.
Maybe mixing this up, but I thought they’ve said that the Neanderthals were the smarter ones.
