US President Donald Trump has renewed his threat to use military force to bring the Arctic island under American control

Denmark has begun sending military personnel to Greenland, and allied reinforcements are expected to follow, Danish media reported on Wednesday.

Greenlandic and Danish authorities announced that Danish military forces will expand their presence on the island and continue conducting exercises with allies throughout 2026.

Greenlanders should expect to see more military planes, troops and ships in Greenland “including from NATO allies,” the statement reads.

Danish Minister Defence Troels Lund Poulsen said on Wednesday afternoon that more countries were inbound for Greenland. Sweden is contributing to the expanded military presence with a small number of unarmed personnel, according to Swedish broadcaster SVT.

“It is at Denmark’s request that Sweden is sending personnel from the Armed Forces,” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on social media. He added the officers arriving on Wednesday are “part of a group from several allied countries” but did not further specify.

Copenhagen’s move comes as tensions with Washington intensify, ahead of a crunch meeting between Greenlandic, Danish and US leaders in Washington this afternoon.

Earlier today, Trump on social media said that anything short of US control of Greenland was “unacceptable” and that “NATO should be leading the way for us to get it”.

What’s left when ‘no’ isn’t an option? Greenland faces Trump

For all the noise around annexation, the Greenland crisis has distilled into an awkward question…

According to Danish broadcaster DR, an advance force (“fortrop”) from the Danish armed forces has already arrived in Greenland to prepare the ground for a possible deployment of larger units. Bild reported that Germany would deploy Bundeswehr personnel to Greenland this week, without specifying numbers. The Norwegian newspaper...

Am I being silly?

I had the thought Trump is manipulating them into defending Greenland.

I think this is a huge political mistake by Trump, and I’m an avid trump supporter. I understand the military importance, but we already have bases there, why not just expand the bases? I think Denmark would accept that. Also, how would the Greenlanders vote on annexation by the US? If they say no, then pursue base expansion.

I’ve seen the reports about how much natural resources Greenland has, but come on Trump, is all this effort really worth it? Just leave Greenland alone, we got more important things to fix right here at home.

I had the thought Trump is manipulating them into defending Greenland.

I don't think so.

I think Trump sincerely wants to take Greenland.

But if Trump backs down, he won't admit defeat. He will declare victory, and say that forcing NATO to defend Greenland was his intention all along.

Agreed. If he invades, he will be impeached and convicted. And it won’t be just Democrats voting for it. It will also be Republicans. And it won’t be just RINO’s. It will be conservatives. If he invades, I will no longer be on the Trump train. This whole thing is bizarrely stupid.

Easy to send troops away from home. Not easy to pay to keep them there for very long.

It’s been speculated (And I think they are correct) that Greenland is essential for the upcoming Golden Dome missile defence system to be deployed and work well. I’m hazarding a guess that the status quo there with our limited footprint won’t work for that and that President Trump and team don’t anticipate that changing while under Danish Control.

Interesting, our allies are starting to send military support to Greenland because Greenland protection is necessary to protect the US. So Trump’s threats are creating the situation where other countries are going to do the job so that we don’t have to? It would seem whether Trump planned it or not the outcome is looking more like 3D chess

I had the same thought! He’s forcing NATO into doing something.

My second thought was he desperately wants out of NATO, and this is his way of forcing Europe to come up with their own defense organization.

Sweden only just recently joined NATO, they probably didn’t think that their first NATO deployment would be against the United States.

These clowns are defending 57000 eskimos from America who isn’t even invading Greenland.

Has Zelensky bothered to ask them why they won’t send troops to Ukraine?
