The closed-door meeting comes as Trump has floated the idea of obtaining Greenland “one way or another.”
Arctic Caucus co-Chairs Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Angus King (I-Maine) will meet on Wednesday with Danish Ambassador Jesper Møller Sørensen to reaffirm their opposition to President Donald Trump’s effort to acquire Greenland.
The closed-door meeting comes as Trump has floated the idea of obtaining Greenland “one way or another” — rhetoric that has drawn sharp rebukes from Copenhagen and Nuuk. The idea of taking over the Danish territory has met resistance from some senior Republicans and outright opposition from Democrats.
Murkowski said she would support a war powers resolution to bar Trump from taking action to invade Greenland, if it were offered. A bipartisan group of House lawmakers has introduced like-minded legislation that covers any NATO ally.
“There’s been a lot of talk about that, which, in fairness, is crazy,” Murkowski said in an interview, referring to speculation that Congress could eventually invoke war powers authorities in connection with Greenland. “Who would have ever thought you would say the word Greenland in the same sentence as war powers resolution?”
The new legislation comes as Hill Democrats search for ways to keep the Trump administration from taking further military action in Venezuela. The Senate is poised to vote this week on a war powers resolution tied to Venezuela, though its path in the House remains unclear.
Trump administration officials, meanwhile, are openly discussing options — including the use of force — to seize Greenland, a move that would trigger NATO’s mutual defense clause and risk shattering the alliance.
“It’s easier,” Trump said Sunday, referring to buying the island. “But one way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland.”
Murkowski said the goal of Wednesday’s meeting — with Møller Sørensen...

Are Congress members allowed to negotiate with foreign countries without the go-ahead from the administration?
If Repubs did this to something Biden wanted, the Dems would call it seditious.
Something like this happened in Oregon when Trump became president. High ups from the Biden justice department huddled with Portland city officials prior to Trump taking over.
Dey stikin dey noses in it cuz dere ain’t nuttin in it for dem, soz nobody gits nuttin.
Duz ya reely tink dat lil ol Danemark has dah enuf big boats tuh git tuh Greenland in time to protect it?
Member d’at sub hunt show? Dere was no sohsisthingies at Danemark, but by Greenland, dey wuz a ton! Why?
As mad as one can get with the way everyone in the Uniparty works in close cooperation to sabotage everything people voted Trump in to do, it isn’t angry enough.
“Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.”
Trump is not the Lord, but the hatred and aggrievement experience are similar.
I no longer care for Republicans.
Get rid of Lisa in 28. With Rand and Thune.
Collins should lose this November.
They are do nothings anyway.
From everything I've seen and heard, the only people truly advocating to take Greenland by force, are Trump, and Steven Miller. Even Rubio and Hegseth are downplaying the possibility as much as they can. Probably because they know it's not about to happen, and nothing good is coming from the threat of doing it.
Closed door meeting?? They represent us...no secret meetings allowed.
Why aren’t members of congress defending American interests? Their position is stupid. Has the dumbass from Alaska ever heard of Seward’s Folly?
Agreed. Most likely scenario is that Rubio returns from his meetings with agreement from Denmark and Greenland to permit a greater U.S. military presence, which they would have granted anyway. But Trump will declare victory anyway, which is fine.
Greenland will be taken. It is just a question of who will do it first.
Let's hope that's what happens. But Trump has been saying that no laws or other men can contain him, only his own "morality" which could leave a lot of other options open, and it's clear he covets Greenland.
How would it be taken from NATO, if the US re-opens the 12+ bases we had there during the Cold War, as Greenland has repeatedly suggested?
I thought Lisa is now an Independant?

Clear violation of the Logan Act (18 USC 953). Will that law EVER be enforced?
We already operate Pituffik Space Base, which accommodates an air and naval presence. Can’t we just expand this to a larger, more robust permanent American base and be done with the issue?
Maybe Trump will have Elon buy it and sell it to the US for $1.
Maybe they are just trying to get a higher offering price from Trump, but it doesn’t sound like it.

“If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark,” Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said at a news conference Tuesday in Copenhagen.
Nielsen appeared with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. “It is not easy to stand up to the United States,” Frederiksen said.
But the leaders of both Denmark and Greenland have stated Greenland is “not for sale,” which has led Trump officials to say that the administration is considering all options, including military force.
“One thing must be clear to everyone: Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States. Greenland does not want to be governed by the United States. Greenland does not want to be part of the United States,” Nielsen said Tuesday.
Why can the Danes “colonize” a land and the worldwide left is fine with it. Denmark has treated Native Greenlanders terribly.
