Victor Davis Hanson: Hegseth Did What Biden Called ‘Impossible’
Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words with The Daily Signal ^ | Dec 17 2025 | victor davis hanson

The criticisms against Sec. of War Pete Hegseth are “entirely political,” and anyone could have said the same things about “the Obama and Biden administration—and much more egregiously.”

Hegseth has turned the U.S. military around in ways no one thought was possible, like getting the military back to meeting all of its recruiting quotas, explains Hanson during today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.”

Recruitment under the Biden administration fell “some 40 to 50,000 recruits,” and former Sec. of Defense Lloyd Austin’s Pentagon used excuses like “people are out of shape, in gangs, using drugs, etc.”

“The real cause was, as Pete Hegseth said when he came in, that people felt that the military was not emphasizing combat, battlefield efficacy… [Now,] There is a record number of Army recruits. The military has met all of its recruiting. That is equivalent to the dramatic revolution on the southern border. Nobody thought we could close the border. We did. Nobody thought we could get recruitment back. Pete Hegseth did,” argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words:”

Ping! Out to the Victor Davis Hanson list

From the comments: What Pete Hegseth is doing has got to be a good thing. Why? Because the Democrats oppose it. That's the hallmark of a good job done well.

An excellent video from Prof Hanson that is worth your ten minutes to watcch!

It seems like everything was impossible to the Bidon administration.

"It seems like everything was impossible to the Bidon administration."

Why would anyone expect different from the political party of n'er-do-wells?

Thanks for posting. Excellent pod by VDH. I especially like the fact that he asked about the global amnesia. I had felt like I was the only one who remembered Obama and the Predator assassinations...

Everything the Biden administration did was intentional. They didn’t want any redneck patriots who might not like the trannies.

Funny how things improve when the priority is having a professional military instead of conducting a social justice experiment.

To me, it wasn't about rednecks or trans, it was about the Obama administration turning the military into a jobs program by lowering entry standards to allow high schools to have somewhere to send their undereducated graduates to keep them off the streets and put money in their pockets.

Austin took that as a starting point and made it much worse.

The laziness and ineffectivity of leftists is the only thing that saves us from their tyranny.

The real problem is that as elsewhere DEI was used to promote suicidal nitwittery and denigrate anyone with the potential to achieve warfighting competence. It’s the same disease that is rotting our Ivy League institutions and turned Brown university into the next candidate for a low cost housing estate.

Pete is only profiting from the many advantages of men and women serving under the Trump administration as opposed to the Biden MISadministration

Actually, I am amazed at the difference in effectiveness between the two administrations.

Forget DOGE. It is still very stark between them.

The border? The medicine?
The economy?

Trump wins in all areas.

The Biden administration proved they wanted to weaken the military not strengthen it as well as the country.

It’s a life long goal for the democrats.

It seems like everything was impossible to the Bidon administration.

That's not true at all. Anything having to do with rainbow behavior, buggery, or trans-lunacy was hyper-possible under Zhao Bi-Dung.
