Dan Bongino has said he will leave his role as the FBI's deputy director in January.
"I want to thank President Trump, AG (Pam) Bondi, and Director (Kash) Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose," Bongino wrote on X. It comes after US President Donald Trump said earlier on Wednesday the former podcast host "did a great job" in office, and "wants to go back to his show".
Bongino, who was appointed to the role by Donald Trump in February, was previously a New York City police officer and a US Secret Service agent. In recent years, he built a very large following through his podcast and other media appearances.
Bongino, a staunch Trump ally, was considered a surprise pick for the role – which had previously been held by career agents – because he had no prior experience with the agency.
The FBI Agents Association, which represents around 14,000 current and former agents, had opposed his appointment to the position. Announcing his decision in a social media post on Wednesday, he said: "I will be leaving my position with the FBI in January. I want to thank President Trump, AG Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose.
"Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege to serve you. God bless America, and all those who defend Her."

Appointment was a waste. Guy didn’t even last a year because he’s a crybaby
Agreed. I’m afraid it will pan out to be just a show ratings stunt.
🖕
Or, he is concerned about the time taken away from his family.
RE: Appointment was a waste. Guy didn’t even last a year because he’s a crybaby
Why did Bongino accept the job offer? He was already making millions from his media business.
For that matter, Judge Jeanine Pirro and Sebastian Gorka were doing better, money-wise as media pundits before taking their government jobs.
I didn’t see it, but I heard he was blinking “HELP” in morse code during FBI Epstein press conferences.
And who you? Jusr another keyboard general with s big mouth?
He also had cancer which is remission. DC stress does not help health problrms.
I hope they get a real enforcer to replace him.
He thought he would be the center of attention all the time like when he was a talkshow host
Waste of time, didn’t accomplish much to drain the swamp. He’ll probably go back on air railing about the Epstein files for ratings.
You don’t a position like that if you aren’t willing to make sacrifices.
“But what I have learned in the course of our properly predicated and necessary investigations into these aforementioned matters, has shocked me down to my core. We cannot run a Republic like this. I’ll never be the same after learning what I’ve learned.” —Dan Bongino, July 26, 2025
“Appointment was a waste. Guy didn’t even last a year because he’s a crybaby”
I see you as the crybaby by taking this so personally.
Of course. That’s why they have a comment section. For people to type opinions on a keyboard.
After income of $150,000/year is present, additional income does not buy more happiness in retirement age.
Paula, his wife, is also in bad shape after her accident. Maybe the tinfoil needs to be taken off and a thinking cap worn for the people speculating on why he is leaving.
This is a strange thing I have seen on FR.
I have posted over 100K times since I joined this forum, and I see all kinds of names popping up over the last few years (and especially the last few months) that I have never seen before, and they have been here as long, or longer than I have.
This person you responded to (ac-rep) is one of those.
You do NOT know anything about his life.
