The Palestinian flag was raised this morning at Toronto City Hall despite fierce grassroots and institutional political resistance.
The flag-raising ceremony has been planned since Canada conditionally recognized Palestinian statehood in September.
It was facing fierce pushback from Canadian Jewish advocacy group Tafsik, and more than 25,000 people have signed a petition to halt the plans.
But despite the furor, the flag was raised over the Canadian building this morning.
Groups of supporters looked on in glee as the black, white, green and red flag waved in the wind. Others took smiling selfies with it fluttering in the background.
Attendees were heard chanting 'free, free Palestine,' and cheering - while some held their own Palestinian flags in the plaza below the flagpole.
Videos taken at the ceremony by Caryma Sa'd, a Canadian lawyer and independent journalist, showed police confronting a man who was protesting the flag raising by playing the Canadian national anthem on a speaker.
Police turned the speaker off, so the man and people around him continued to sing a capella and finished the anthem.
People watching the event online showed their outrage that the Canadian man was being slammed for singing the country's anthem.
One wrote: 'Imagine that, not being able to root, be proud or support your country and sovereignty. I’m still waiting to hear how the raising of this flag helps with inflation and the cost of living. If Canada was so accepting, shouldn’t we raise the flag of every country.'
Another person said: 'Sacrilegious, traitorous and empathetic suicidal act by woke politicians. There should be one and only one flag flown across this country.

Canadians, British and Europe MAY someday be able to comprehend that a so called Palestinian is a Radical Muslim and as such they will never be satisfied anywhere on earth for anything less than all non believers (of Islam) being dead. There is only one solution for a radical muslim Palestinian. And, I think that solution is to ship every last one to a South Seas Island. There they can have Statehood and fly their flag and beat their women.
