Ukraine faces ‘forever war’ unless Europe steps up pressure on Russia, says ex-Nato chief

Ukraine is facing a “forever war” and a slow erosion of territory unless Europe dramatically increases pressure on Russia, including by deploying troops and establishing a missile and drone shield on Nato territory to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks on its infrastructure, a former Nato secretary general has said.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who held the Nato post from 2009 to 2014 and was the prime minister of Denmark from 2001 to 2009, said in an interview with the Guardian that if countries such as Poland agreed to host such air defences, Russia would understand that an attack on them would be an attack on the whole of the Nato alliance.

He said: “We have to help the Ukrainian [people] protect themselves against Russian missiles and drones by building an air shield helping the Ukrainians shoot down Russian missiles and drones. Nato countries neighbouring Ukraine can be the location for a Nato-based air defence and missile system.”

Rasmussen also called for the deployment of a European protection force for Ukraine in advance of a ceasefire agreement. He said the “coalition of the willing” hoping to assemble such a force for when fighting ends had been reduced to a coalition of the waiting.

“If we do not carry out major changes in strategy we will look into a forever war,” he said. “Putin has no incentive to engage in peace negotiations so long as he thinks he can win on the battlefield. Changes in speed and mindset are needed.”

Rasmussen, who has forged close links with the Ukrainian leadership, is touring European capitals, including London to meet the UK national security adviser, Jonathan Powell.

NATO and the EU need a “forever war” to cling to power as their economies collapse.

They also could have negotiated a peace any time in the last 3(?) years.

Feel free, Z Man.

Russia seems to have won some dirt.

Stop the killing already!

The war certainly won't last forever or even a couple of years unless Europe gets involved.

One of the best things that could happen to this country is if Russia did takeover all of Ukraine, which it has no desire to do.

That way, US taxpayers won't be on the hook for paying to prop up what's left of it.

“One of the best things that could happen to this country is if Russia did takeover all of Ukraine”

I have stated early, repeatedly and consistently on this site that US essential interests are best served by complete Russian victory. Though now complete victory appears a little out of reach.

Putin is more than satisfied with the areas he already controls; they are demographically Russian, politically Russian-leaning. These areas are only part of “Ukraine” because back in the day the Politburo administratively transferred them to the Ukrainian SSR. NATO is making it impossible for this war the end without Putin having to flatten the whole country. And, BTW, Putin doesn’t want or need anything that EU nations have.

Forever war? Nyet. The Ukies manpower is depleted. Ukraine Rada lifted war age males 18-22 from leaving Ukraine. An estimated 250,000 have left since then.
Confirmed by Poland stating they can not accept anymore.

“Ukraine allows 18- to 22-year-old men to leave country once again.

This is the Guardian so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Ironic to see the Guardian taking a pro war stance which is unusual and speaks volumes about the true motivations of the war in Ukraine. They are always on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of issues. If they are advocating for something you can bet rational people should be against it.

And the comment that Zelensky “ needs to sell peace” to the “reluctant” Ukrainian people is absurd - 75% of the Ukraine people want the war to end.

No wonder the natives are restless. Most Russian males will die before they reach retirement age!

https://www.google.com/search?q=putin+extends+retirement+ageAI Overview

In 2018, President Vladimir Putin signed a law to raise Russia’s national retirement age, a decision that faced significant public opposition. The reform gradually increased the retirement age for men from 60 to 65 and for women from 55 to 60, with a five-year increase for both sexes. Putin justified the changes due to demographic problems and a desire for long-term stability, while critics noted the new age would be similar to the life expectancy for many men.

Putin is more than satisfied with the areas he already controls

Which is why Putin rejected Trump's ceasefire and instead demanded that more Ukrainian controlled territory had to be handed over.

NATO and the EU need a "forever war"

Lol, which is why NATO and the EU agreed to Trump's ceasefire, which Putin rejected. Makes sense
