Sen. John Fetterman calls on Republicans to “nuke the filibuster” during a Fox News interview, arguing the Senate should eliminate its own power to halt spending bills.
========================================================================
Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania called on Republicans to “nuke the filibuster” when it comes to government funding votes, effectively stripping the upper chamber of its own power to halt federal spending.
During an interview with Kayleigh McEnany, Fetterman argued that the Senate should carve out an exception to the filibuster rule for budget and appropriations bills, saying that doing so would make it “almost impossible” for either party to force a government shutdown in the future.
Fetterman went even further, suggesting the Senate should “remove itself of the power” to shut down the government, effectively handing permanent control over spending to whatever party holds a simple majority at any given time.
John Fetterman:
Well, I just know that two things must be true in this situation right now. SNAP depends on 2 million Pennsylvanians to feed themselves, and I believe it’s about 40 million Americans across the nation. That’s a big deal right now.
And now we all realize that a lot of the premiums are going to go up, and we might want to address that too. We can support those two things, but I think it’s fundamentally wrong, regardless, to shut our government down for those things. The Republican side has their priorities; we have our priorities. I think we have to agree that our government must be open.
Kayleigh McEnany:
You think it’s time for Republicans to nuke the filibuster and end this thing?
John Fetterman:
I think I broached that before. I think it’s entirely appropriate. I would remind all of us — the Democrats — we wanted to nuke the entire filibuster. I’m referring to right now carving out this specific situation. I’m not talking about eliminating the entire filibuster.
It’s really not much different than about the en bloc nominees, and I think that was appropriate to do in that situation as well, too. Carving out the filibuster now would make it almost impossible to shut our government down in the future, regardless if it’s the Democrats or the Republicans doing these things. We should remove our own power to shut this down in this way.

I'd love to see Fetternam take on Newscum and the Occasional Cortex in '28.
Ignore the bs issuing from his mouth, he doesn't mean any of it.
In my best Admiral Ackbar, it’s a trap.
Honestly no, this is short sighted…
Force the Dems to keep voting on individual bills.
What a ploy. First criticize your fellow RATS about shutting down the government, then play devil’s advocate for them to push to end the Filibuster. Nuke yourself Fetterman. Bait and switch.
fetterman begs the GOP to bail out the Dems, who painted themselves into a corner, by nuking the filibuster... of course, if the GOP does that, the Dems will IMMEDIATELY attack the GOP for being tyrannical ...
My solution is nuke the cloture vote & require old school non-stop talking to keep the gov’t shutdown.
See how long Spartacus can talk.
Yep Fetterman is a fraud. He’s trying to give the rats a way out that won’t upset the rabid rat base and set a time bomb to blow if the rats get the Senate back.
Uncle Fester from Pennsylvania can kiss my taint.
He’s a commie supporter playing the role of the judas goat for commies.
Nothing he says is truthful. He is not conservative or even moderate. He is a wealthy communist. Judas Goat.
I sincerely hope the GOP does not fall into this obvious trap.
Fetterman is an imbecile.
Uh, yeah... NO
He is actually very reasonable and the last sane person in the rat party.
How about a balanced budget? Now, there’s a novel idea!!
It’s the spending, stupid.
And since it’s the spending, stupid, let’s end the use of baseline budgeting.
Someone should get Fetterman on the record about whether or not he would support that.
Why? My wife and I are rather enjoying this one.
Besides little Belgium -- home to NATO and the EU -- went through "shutdowns" of their political governance twice. One lasted for 589 days. I worked contracts there in that time. It was no big deal, except to the politicians.
Regardless which “team” wins or loses on the filibuster RULE, it’s not Constitutional. The 60 vote threshold was NOT put into the Constitution for this exact reason we are suffering through today. The framers had full faith and confidence in the skullduggery and evil of the human heart.
