Yellowstone's Fleeing Animals Spark Imminent Volcanic Eruption Concerns, But Experts Say What’s Really Going On
The Travel ^ | 07 17 2025 | Lauren Feather

America's first national park and the first and oldest in the world, Yellowstone National Park, is regularly in the headlines. Just recently, Yellowstone visitors shared the grim reality of trying to gain entry to the park while it experiences record-high visitation—on a Tuesday morning of all days, not even on a busy weekend. However, some of the most eyebrow-raising stories coming out of the park typically involve visitors regularly crossing the line; for example, only days ago, a park visitor was spotted actually tasting the thermal water of one of Yellowstone's springs.

Naturally, though, accounts of tourists behaving badly also involve nerve-wracking encounters with the park's wildlife. This week, for instance, visitors were caught risking their lives getting too close to Yellowstone's bison, serving as a crucial reminder that the park isn't a petting zoo, which one visitor unfortunately learned the hard way after getting gored by a bison at Yellowstone earlier in the year.

Careless behavior towards animals in the park happens seemingly all the time, but this time, a series of questionable videos show it's the animals who are behaving strangely—rather, that's what they're falsely leading the public to believe, causing unnecessary doom and gloom about an impending volcanic eruption. The trending videos of "fleeing" animals at Yellowstone have actually forced officials and experts to clarify what's really happening at the park and why the animals look like they're high-tailing it out of there (spoiler alert: they're not).

"Long story short, there's no reason to worry right now, despite the recent social media hype about impending doom—Yellowstone's volcanic system is as unbothered as the animals of Yellowstone, who've merely been captured on video continuing their ancient travel routines across the park's vast landscapes that once did form by the power of subterranean and volcanic forces over the ages."

It’s a big one. Should it ever erupt the entire west will be covered with ash I’m told. Includes northern Mexico.

A story about a non story. They could make a TV show like that.

The animals heard the Epstein docs would be released in the park. So they are getting out of harms way.

I wasn’t worried about it, until the headline said that “experts” said not to worry about it. LOL

I was thinking Seinfeld, a show about nothing. But you reminded me of Geraldo's winner - Al Capone's vaults.

The cows were smart enough to move to high ground before the flooding in Texas.

I’d trust the animals over the “experts”...

Worse case, you left for no reason.
best case, you are still alive.

Was that in 2014 - two weeks after people commented on what they thought was the same strange animal behavior? And did geologists use all the advance-warning data to predict that one weeks or years in advance?

“...visitors were caught risking their lives getting too close to Yellowstone’s bison, serving as a crucial reminder that the park isn’t a petting zoo,...”

They should put warning signs about petting buffalos, bears, wolves etc but it’s okay to pet the rattlesnakes.
