~ Hall of Heroes ~ Stephen Holden Doane Info from here. | | Stephen Holden Doane (October 13, 1947 – March 25, 1969) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War.Doane joined the Army from Albany, New York in 1967, and went through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. By March 25, 1969 was serving as a first lieutenant in Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. During a firefight on that day, in Hau Nghia Province, Republic of Vietnam, Doane destroyed an enemy bunker by carrying an activated hand grenade into it, sacrificing himself to take out the hostile position. Doane, aged 21 at his death, was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia. | For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. First Lt. Doane was serving as a platoon leader when his company, engaged in a tactical operation, abruptly contacted an enemy force concealed in protected bunkers and trenches. Three of the leading soldiers were pinned down by enemy crossfire. One was seriously wounded. After efforts of 1 platoon to rescue these men had failed, it became obvious that only a small group could successfully move close enough to destroy the enemy position and rescue or relieve the trapped soldiers, 1st Lt. Doane, although fully aware of the danger of such an action, crawled to the nearest enemy bunker and silenced it. He was wounded but continued to advance to a second enemy bunker. As he prepared to throw a grenade, he was again wounded. Undaunted, he deliberately pulled the pin on the grenade and lunged with it into the enemy bunker, destroying this final obstacle. 1st Lt. Doane's supreme act enabled his company to rescue the trapped men without further casualties. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by this officer were an inspiration to his men and are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army | Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...hope you and Tippy are enjoying your sunrise walks.
High 60s here again today, but no sun for sitting out on the deck.

I hooked the trickle charger onto the bike, and, even though I rigged an umbrulla to shade it from the sun, the Trickle Charger MELTED. Perhaps the heat produced charging the battery was exacerbated by the 95 degree heat, and didn’t vent.
Of course I disconnected it.
I’m afraid to plug it back in, as it might short out the whole bike. The battery was charging for about seven hours, so it wasn’t fully charged yet.
Oh well, I’ll figure it out.

Regarding Stephen Holden Doane, I do not remember who asked the question: “Where do we get such men?”

Howdy, Kathy.
Disappointing to see you didn’t get any rain today. Did you get some of the sunshine that broke out this afternoon at least?

Howdy, PRO.
Did you have a good 4th of July weekend even though it’s toasty?
Toasty here, too, but I managed to get some mowing done each day and FINALLY have this place caught up.
Until it rains again, and we have a wet week ahead.

Hey there, radu!
It was a good day, but of course everyone’s hearts here are heavy because of the loss of life in our state, including one of our local LEO, his girlfriend and both his parents. Two of his siblings are alive.
It wasn’t too bad weather-wise. Got up to about 91, but it’s humid here, too, so the “feel like” was about 93. Doable. At least it wasn’t 100+ as it sometimes is in July. For that we’re all thankful.
Sorry it was so hot and steamy there. I did see up-thread that you finally got the whole lawn mowed. That was a reason to celebrate!

I think hearts are heavy across the country over what’s going on down there. So sorry to hear about your local LEO and his family.
It was cooler there than it was here! It hit 95 and the heat index was 100 or a little more. No clouds or breeze for relief either like we’ve had the past 3 days. I almost didn’t mow but decided to go for it at 6:00. Got done in just enough time to be able to see to blow the clippings off of Champ and me, and was back in the house at 8:00. With rain chances ramping up this week, I just couldn’t let it go.
I’m whipped but at least I won’t fret about it this week.
