The world has one last chance to save the two-state solution
The Washington Post ^ | June 17, 2925 | Ali Shihabi

Posted on 06/17/2025 11:20:26 AM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

Formally backing a Palestinian state is no longer a symbolic gesture. It’s a strategic imperative.

Ali Shihabi is a Saudi author and commentator and member of the advisory board of the new Saudi region of Neom planned by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The world should wait no longer to formally recognize the State of Palestine. This is not about sentiment or symbolism. It is about urgent, necessary action to rescue a peace process on life support. Recognition is a critical diplomatic tool to shift a stagnant and increasingly dangerous status quo.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has persisted for more than seven decades. Millions of Palestinians remain under occupation or in refugee camps, with no political horizon in sight. The absence of a credible path to statehood has created a vacuum filled with despair — and, increasingly, radicalization. Recognition of Palestine can begin to reverse this dynamic. It is the last nonviolent lever left to pull.

To be clear: Recognition is not about punishing Israel or granting Palestinians an unearned victory. It is a necessary political step to reintroduce the possibility of a negotiated peace. It empowers diplomacy and offers Palestinians a stake in a future built on governance, not resistance.

Today, the Israeli government has openly abandoned even the pretense of supporting a two-state solution. With more than half a million settlers in the West Bank and growing momentum toward annexation, the infrastructure of permanent occupation is nearly complete. Waiting for Israeli political will before recognizing Palestine is unrealistic and dangerous. It risks signaling tacit approval for further annexation and condemning the region to unending conflict.

Recognition is the only way to preserve what remains of hope for a two-state solution — the only framework that can provide sustainable security for both Palestinians and Israelis and enable Israel’s full integration...

Palestinians and Israelis agree on only two things: It’s one country and it’s theirs.

The so-called ‘Palestinians’ have never seemed to really want a two-state solution.

They want ‘the river to the sea’.

They had their chance of a state in Gaza and look what they did with it. Do they want to give the West Bank to them?

What’s the rush? Once the mullahs in Iran are gone in a few days, the Palestinians lose tons of leverage - less money and a cutoff of weapons.

Desperate to get their Muslim fundamentalist state set up right next to Israel before their big state sponsor goes away.

“They had their chance of a state in Gaza and look what they did with it.”

Very true. They had citrus groves, productive greenhouses and even a bit of light industry in Gaza.

With a bit of work, they could easily have sold fruits and vegetables to Europe and the rest of the Middle East. Those areas would have been eager to buy those goods. The Gazans could have employed many of their people. There was nothing but upward potential.

But oh no, the Gazans went ahead and destroyed everything they had been given.

This is a fantasy. Never happening.
Israel moved out and left Gaza to rule it’s own destiny.
Gaza built a terrorist state bent on annihilating Israel.
It is immoral to reward murder, rape, kidnapping & genocidal behavior. There is no Palestinian state and there never can be in Gaza.
Let Jordan cede territory or Egypt or Africa but never Gaza. That door closed on Oct 7th.
