Ten nukes? And a June 15 'go' date?

On May 31, The Frank reported that Iran has a stockpile of 408.6 kilograms of 60%-enriched uranium—enough for roughly 10 nuclear weapons. U.S. officials say it could take Iran less than two weeks to convert this highly enriched uranium into enough weapons-grade 90% fissile material for a nuclear weapon.

Two weeks!

June 15!!

Donald Trump says he wants a strong deal with Iran.

“I want it very strong where we can go in with inspectors. We can take whatever we want, we can blow up whatever we want, but nobody getting killed. We can blow up a lab, but nobody’s going to be in the lab, as opposed to everybody being in the lab and blowing it up,” Trump said.

That’s the right attitude, but is it feasible that Iran will agree to it? Trump wants a “deal.” Any deal requires some measure of trust. Can Iran be trusted at all?

One former national security adviser says “no”:

“I think we’re really at a very important point here, whether, whether Trump is going to try and continue these negotiations, which I think are going to be completely fruitless, or whether Israel is going to do what it has to do to protect its very existence,” Bolton said Friday evening in an appearance on NewsNation’s “On Balance.”

It is most distressing that Uncle Sam has been so stupid for so long to let things get this far, and it seems our trust that Israel would never let it happen has been misplaced.

The Muslims love to mock us with “We love death more than you love life!” Does not that love of death render Iran invulnerable to the doctrine of “mutually assured destruction” (MAD)?

Could it be that the dealmeister is so beguiled by the prospective glory...

Any FReeper know what kind of bomb that Iran has enough nuclear material to make? Are we talking about 10 dirty bombs, 10 tactical nukes, or 10 major nukes?

I remember these words when I was in high school back in the early 1990’s. Just a few weeks from a nuclear bomb!

Sounds like ten (10) fission (atomic) weapons....usually range from 1-100 kt......think Hiroshima, not megaton thermonuclear which requires plutonium.

Probably low-yield tactical nukes.

I don't think they have an ICBM, so they could only mount it on an intermediate range missile - not enough to reach DC, but Tel Aviv would be within range.

I doubt they even make it off the pad - Israel would launch as they're fueling on the pad.

“Iran is weeks away from the bomb” deja vu all over again.

I read a book, several times titled: The Making Of The Atomic Bomb - a great physics study. Thing is, uranium is as heavy as lead. You need a trigger to make it go so that it’ll obtain critical mass and go blooie. Then you need a device to deliver over 30,000lbs. Just having nuclear material is one thing, forming it into a bomb is another.

I agree with FReeper psalm 73’s response in comment #10. It’s probably enough material for more than a tactical nuke, but at most a Hiroshima type atom bomb (Fat Man or Little Boy). But air delivery is still the trick. Iran probably doesn’t have the means to fly it to the U.S., but, as Iran has already proven, they can fly it to Israel and parts of Europe. All that’d be left to figure out is if they can get it through the air defenses.

Or if the missile has enough lift capacity.

I saw that. They can't even perform routine maintenance on their basic weapons systems - it's doubtful they could successfully assemble, launch, and target an ICBM.

Saying and doing are not the same thing.

“Donald Trump says he wants a strong deal with Iran. “I want it very strong where we can go in with inspectors. We can take whatever we want, we can blow up whatever we want, ...”

Yeah I’m sure he can get the mullahs to go along with that. :-)

The point was that the Iranians are showing several solid-fuel missiles in an array of classes — including IRBM. So don’t count on getting a launch warning while a liquid-fuel rocket is fueling on the pad.

You plan for the worst-case by assuming that the enemies weapons work as advertised. When they don’t, great.

Having the material does not mean you can build a bomb overnight and deliver it.

The delivery system is the final hurdle. Iran has trucks and ships. Their missiles are crap. We all assume that they would use their nuke (because they only get one chance) on Israel. I think they would use it on the US or a US base. Or, on a US carrier group. How they get it there is still a mystery.

In the end, Iran would become a skid mark on the bottom of Western Asia. I cannot believe they would be that stupid.

Likely better than Hiroshima, but not “thermonuclear.” And they will only have tested it in a simulation. They get one bite at this apple.
