Bleary-eyed House Republicans advanced the One Big Beautiful Bill Act past the Rules Committee after a marathon hearing Wednesday, overcoming the final hurdle needed to bring it up for a floor vote.
In an 8-4 vote shortly before 11 p.m., the colossal legislation cleared the GOP-led committee along party lines.
The panel convened at 1 a.m. Wednesday to consider the measure due to requirements that Democrats get two days to file minority views.
A “Manager’s Amendment” making last-minute tweaks to the mammoth bill — including a provision cementing a deal to increase the State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions cap by 400% — was unveiled to the committee after more than 20 hours of debate.
More than 500 amendments introduced by Democrats were rejected over the course of the punishingly drawn-out hearing.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has been hoping to push the megabill through the House by Memorial Day before the lower chamber breaks for a one-week recess next week, but is still grappling with multiple holdouts and a razor-thin margin.

What became of the tax-free Social Security?
It’s in the article.
The Byrd Rule.
Three things I wanted:
1. Gut all the “green” energy crapola and save many trillions
2. Stop taxing social security
3. Make the previous Trump tax cuts permanent.
Apparently the bill fails on 1 & 2. Hoping it does #3.
ANY SALT deductions are corrupt..
Remember when conservatives considered taxes evil?
I guess the Occupy Wall Street wing of the Republican Party is out of the closet now.
Only a true class warfare Democrat would whine about deductions/lower taxable income.
What next? Taxes are the price we pay for civil society?
Somebody failed to mention to Trump That you can’t do that in a reconciliation. You can do other things it seems but not that. Over promise and under deliver Again
You do however get some kind of a cockamamie Adjustment that will give you another $400 a year or something like that. Don’t spend it all in 1 place you will upset the economy.
I was somewhat enjoying Baked lays barbecue potato chips this evening Until I noticed it was a $5 12 oz bag
Sweet, another Porkulus budget. We just haven’t had enough of these.
Time to switch to the Walmart brand. Great Value!
Too much salt in the Pork.
Aldi. Nearly 1/3 the price and just as good. I keep expecting them to get greedy.
Wife says, “But they don’t always have them.” Do without I says but don’t be bringing anymore $5 scrawny bags of chips around here. Eat something else.
I wondered what SALT would mean for me as a Texas homeowner.
Answer: Nothing. Since I’m not wealthy.

The tax free SS benefit plan got cut down to a $4000 deduction.
Good for just 5 years.
“Only a true class warfare Democrat would whine about deductions/lower taxable income.”
Actually a only a COMPLETE moron would argue for a ‘deduction’ which allows states and localities to charge ALL US taxpayers for their taxation.
“What’s next? Taxes are the price we pay for civil society?”
umm, well, if you really haven’t been paying attention to all of human history, taxes are a cost of living , geez !
my sincerest apologies if I neglected to detect a /s in your post, but it really wasn’t there, in which case really bad about you.
The property tax on my residence in Austin this year is going to be $17,000. The SALT would help. That said, I’d much prefer a flat income tax instead of these lobbyist and special interest gimmicks.
Better hold up on there, they are not going with the the flow on trade. Cutting a paltry 1,500 jobs, raising prices, and going to eliminate the .99 for.00 Gallon of whole GV Milk is $5.00 in West Tennessee. Blame Trump. Even Target gave in. Not that it will change the minds of those who already boycott them. I won’t drive 2 hours round trip to shop there anyway.
“ANY SALT deductions are corrupt..”
Yep - it’s obscene that those of us who live elsewhere, and are retired with fixed incomes, or are not in position to itemize, have to pay for those who live under onerous tax hellholes...
can someone explain the reasoning why no tax on overtime? seems like it pinpoints a cut for a small group of people to me. (wanna bet that group grows?)
More than 500 amendments introduced by Democrats were rejected
aka Pork fest rained on
