Decade after Tea Party movement, conservatives still unable to meaningfully cut debt

As President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” moves toward a final vote in the House, conservative budget hawks are livid that it largely fails to offer spending cuts to their satisfaction, marking the latest in a long line of punts for the House GOP that has repeatedly vowed to address the national debt.

Republicans have long campaigned on addressing the debt, with the Tea Party movement notching historic election wins under President Barack Obama. In 2010, Republicans won control of the House and reduced the Democratic majority in the Senate. Yet, even when Trump first took office, Congress did not pass a balanced budget.

Recommended for you Under President Joe Biden, House conservatives aggressively pushed then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy to agree to budget concessions when challenging his leadership. His attempts failed to satisfy debt hawks and McCarthy lost his post in October 2023. His replacement, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., reportedly frustrated fiscal conservatives, perhaps even more so than his predecessor.

I wouldn't have used the word "conservative" in the headline. I would have used the "GOP". Big difference between the two.

The dirty little secret is that many GOP members of Congress represent states and districts that are filled with white people on welfare. There’s no way in hell any of these representatives are voting to cut spending.

If we use doge to get rid of the waste fraud and abuse spending we only have to raise the debt ceiling by a couple trillion.

Republicans are useless. Only better than the Dems, in sum, but the pathetic controlled opposition they’re meant to be.

That's what I was going to say. We have no conservatives in Kongress. Only team players. Thing is, they're playing for the RAT team and are all in business together.

If conservative voters could get their act together and mobilize to punish our Repugnant Kongress Reps, we might have something enduring. As it is, POTUS Trump is but a temporary reprieve. After him is sure to follow another career politician.

DOGE can only point to WF&A, but has avoided searching in the most obvious places for it (besides USAID), while instead connecting all the elements for an AI-coordinated control grid.

Meanwhile, the useless GOP in Congress doesn’t address the vast majority of cuts that DOGE has identified. Then they call a 1 am committee meeting to spring big giveaways outside the view of the public. (Yes, I was up early watching, and I’m disgusted.)

Until the credit agencies lower the rating for Treasury bonds to C, they will keep spending like South American dictators.

Why we don’t see the huge and massive support for DOGE. Sure, they’ll say they like it, but are more than willing to sit back, let DOGE & Elon take all the heat while they do nothing.
Alaska’s most famous Congress critters of old, Ted Stevens and Don Young both agreed that their #1 job was to get as much federal pork directed to Alaska as they could. Conservatives? Not so much.

Conservative apathy allowed the Tea Party to be murdered. Conservatives just sat on the sidelines and watched the murder in progress.

The condemnation is premature.

Return to regular order is next.

Fiscal sanity was destroyed as a realistic goal when Congress stopped functioning pursuant to regular order.

Now that regular order is on the horizon, spending control as an actual possibility can begin to be discussed.

Give it time and you’ll see that PDJT will begin to crush the inveterate overspenders.

America is on track to financially collapse and all hell is going to break loose because there doesn’t seem to be enough adults around be fiscally responsible. This should be the number one issue. The President should be on TV educating the public on the situation and leading.

Elon & Co at DOGE did all their work with nothing to show for it. I saw his recent interview and he looked disappointed. We had such hope for a change, to get back to reality and reasonable budgets. The”Wealth Pump” of the treasury will continue to make the connected rich richer and we’re paying for it. They think we’re stupid and they’re right.

I agree. From what I've read, the Big Beautiful Bill cuts spending by 15%. I'm counting that as a good start for 4 months into Trump's term. The time is not for us to criticize ... as long as after the Big Beautiful is passed Trump and Republicans keep their foot on the gas and cut away all that DOGE found, then reduce spending even further until we have a balanced budget.

The people that they’re calling “conservatives” - are not.

RINOs are essentially democrats, as an R is just a D with legs. Equally useless, though they talk the talk, they don’t walk the talk.
