Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter dead at 85

Retired Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter, the ascetic bachelor and New Hampshire Republican who became a darling of liberals during his nearly 20 years on the bench, has died. He was 85.

Souter died Thursday at his home in New Hampshire, the Supreme Court said in a statement Friday.

He retired from the court in June 2009, giving President Barack Obama his first Supreme Court vacancy to fill. Obama chose Sonia Sotomayor, the court’s first Latina justice.

Souter was appointed by Republican President George H.W. Bush in 1990. He was a reliably liberal vote on abortion, church-state relations, freedom of expression and the accessibility of federal courts.

I blame Sununu for Souter. And Bush for listening to him.

I’ve always wondered why it is when a Republican President picks someone for the Supreme Court, they end up straying off ideologically - but when a Democrat President picks someone, they stay true to their cause?

One of the worst, most disappointing Supreme Court justices of our lifetimes.

Souter enjoyed the adulation of the DC crowd and their media with his left-wing rulings. Now he has to explain his actions to the highest court.

Judges such as Thomas, Alito, Scalia, stayed solid as conservatives. As for so many others, I have no answers. Is it because of the liberal atmosphere in Washington DC, the whole cocktail party thing, where they want to fit in?

And the highest court won’t be as understanding if you know what I mean.

The Bushies were globalists a lot closer to Obama and Clinton than to Trump; certainly not conservatives. In retrospect, their picks were not surprising.

Meaning, will the dems claim him for their hero? Or will everyone be kind.

I hope the comments here stay civil.

I remember when both Barbara Bush and George HW Bush died, huge numbers of comments were deleted because they were so vile.

As I remember he was a hermit when nominated in the wake of Bork and Thomas. Bush ‘41 and the GOP wanted someone nobody knew anything about.

It might be a sitting senator with a political record might be the best appointees-easier to confirm amongst their ‘collegues’. I’m thinking about how stale Oren Hatch and John Cornyn became as they advanced to their 3rd terms. They couda been ‘kicked upstairs’.

My idea-nominate JD Vance. He’ll be there for 40 years.
Then there’s David Cameron, a young ‘loser’ who could win for us for 40 years.

The rats will go on the warpath over their own peril.

Souter was appointed by Republican President George H.W. Bush in 1990. He was a reliably liberal vote

But NEVER does a Dem President appoint a justice who turns out to be reliably conservative.

“I’ve always wondered why it is when a Republican President picks someone for the Supreme Court, they end up straying off ideologically - but when a Democrat President picks someone, they stay true to their cause?”

I blame it on the educational system. We let the Left take it over and thus, in the back of their minds, most conservatives have some degree of doubt about their values.

Bottom line - it’s not reasonable for us to expect Republican picks to always be like Thomas/Scalia when the Far Left has access to them from Kindergarten through Law School.

And yet our favorite justices currently serving, Thomas and Alito, were nominated by the Bush presidents. It does seem like a roll of the dice on these judges.

And Trump’s three Supreme Court nominees are regularly criticized here on Free Republic, for having gone liberal on certain cases.
